"Stop you can't do this to him!" Persephone shouted at Hades. He didn't listen, he dragged the poor child down the hall. The child glowed white, taking after his mother's nature. "HE WILL BE DARK, AN HEIR TO MY THRONE." The child screamed and begged and pushed but it was no use. Hades held the child over the portal to the mortal realm.
"Turn dark or you will be cast out!" Hades' voice boomed throughout the cavern. Persephone grew angry. She stomped her foot and her voice full of energy triumphed over Hades'. "ENOUGH." She shouted. The cave began to shake. The child barely holding on to his fathers hand. Hades' lost his footing and the child fell.
He and Persephone reached down but it was too late. The child fell through the portal and turned mortal. Persephone rushed down to earth, searching far and wide for her child but she couldn't find him, for he wasn't a God anymore.
Persephone raised her hands up in the air. "For as long as it takes and as much as I'll bear, a mother's love will always be there. For when I visit let it be known, the presence of my child; I cast this in stone." Lightening struck into the ground and four runes lay there. Persephone's sing song spell made it possible for her to visit her child when she was free from the underworld.
13 years later...
"We've been through this time and time again." My best friend was arguing to me yet again about our project for greek mythology. "Hades' is a no good woman stealing shrew. He literally comes up to earth, was all 'Oh I love her' and kidnapped her like what the heck!?"
I rolled my eyes. "It is a love story. Although he might not have gone about it the right way, I still believe that Persephone would of escaped had she not fallen in love." She looked at me with daggers. "You know out of the two of us I bet you'd fall for a dark overlord of the worlds."
I laughed at her. "Come one we gotta go." The bell rang and we ran upstairs so we wouldn't be late for home room. I swear she had such an interesting take on mythology but she was always so um.. aggressive about it? Don't get me wrong, rights for all and all that. But she didn't have to hate men so much, well straight men.
The teacher started to call out our names. "Adeline." My best friend, she was also so fierce. Quick to go right for the kill. She was killer in debate club. "Dion." I looked up from my desk. "Here!" I quickly looked back down and finished drawing my doodle. I always like to draw different flowers with flames around them.
Never engulfed or burning them, just dancing around them. "We have a new student in class today." Everyone looked towards the door and a dark haired boy walked in. He felt weird. Admitting that felt weird, I don't understand it. I could sense people, call it deep rooted intuition but I don't know. He was dark. But not evil. His eyes scanned the room and landed on me. Our gazes held until the teacher broke it.
"This is Zachary-" he was cut off. "Just Zach."
Everyone in the class laughed but I just stared at him. As if he commanded my attention. I broke gaze and looked down at my hands. I saw a flash of gold and then it was gone. I looked back up at him and he walked past me and took his seat. I blinked a few times trying to make sense of my hands but they were normal, nothing odd about them.
Adeline looked over at me, as if she felt exactly what I had felt. After the bell rang we made our way to our lockers. I was so ready for the day to be over. I just want to go home and rest. But today was the first day of spring, which meant that Mrs. Penelope would be back in town to open the green house.
"So what do you think is up with that new kid? He look kid of.." I let out a nervous laugh. "Kind of like he wanted to murder me?" She closed her locker after putting away her books. "Actually, yeah. He did look kind of like you were the last person he wanted to see." I felt nervous. I looked around but he was nowhere in sight. I looked back at Adeline.
"You don't think he knows?" I whispered. Her eyes widened. "Uh, how would he. You, your cat, and I am the only one's who know that you're Kinsey six gay." I laughed nervously and held up my finger to my mouth, telling her to shut it.
"All I'm saying is, if he tries to mess with you I'll kill him." I smiled. "Thanks Adeline." The final bell rang and we said our goodbye as she headed to her favorite after school activity, jujitsu.
I ran out of the doors as fast as I could and drove over to the green house. After getting out I noticed that the plants looked as if they were alive and dancing again. A usual sign that she was back in her shop. I walked into the door and found Mrs. Penelope dancing with the plants to some loud pop music.
She turned around and smiled at me. "Hello child, right on time." I nodded. "As if you're ever late to spring." She danced and danced with the plants and I joined her. She was always so happy and hippie. It made me sad when she'd leave in the Fall. I think it made her sad too.
She stopped dancing for a second and looked at me, eyes deep with concern.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
I looked down at my hands and they glowed a deep gold and then it was gone. "How long have your hands been doing that?" I looked back up at her. "Just today, but I thought I was imagining it."
She grabbed my hands and ran her hands across them. She took out some dried leaves and whispered something that I couldn't understand. I felt the air around us swirl around and then it was gone. I stared at her and the dried leaves in my hands. "That should hide it for now." I took a step back.
"What was that? And how did you know what to do?" She eyed me shyly. "All I can say is if I didn't subside it HE would find you." I shut my mouth. I opened it a few times but words wouldn't come out. I just gave her a curious look but shook my head. I didn't want to know more, this is probably a dream right? Yeah, had to be a dream. Totally not real.
"Okay. I'm gonna go water some flowers." She gave me a sympathetic look but I didn't need nor have the desire to know more. I felt calm though, gentle. Which I welcomed.
