Garth looks just as confused as I am right now. He pulls me over to talk in private.
"Uhh..? No offence, but he seems reallllyyy shady. I mean he's your family and he doesn't even bother to say that you're sorta neighbours??" He says.
"I don't know, I know he's not lying..he has my moms eyes" I say surely.
"I hope you're right" he says.
I turn around and head back over to 'Sean'
"Can I see where you live?" I say.
"Of course. Get on" he gestures his horse.
"Oh, uh. I was kinda hoping Garth could come.." I say. And look to Garth.
"How fast are you?" Sean asks Garth.
"Oh, um I'm not sure?" Garth says.
"Shall we find out?" Sean says. Slightly laughing.
Garth nods.
I get on his horse. I haven't been on a horse in forever.. it's weird. We head to his house, and at this point the horse is trotting. Its kinda hard to stay on.
I look back to see Garth sprinting like an idiot. I wonder how long he'll be able to keep it up.
"Uhh hey, maybe go a little easy on Garth?" I say.
Sean looks back to see Garth still sprinting.
"He's pretty fast. I think he'll survive another minute or two" he says,
We get there and Garth looks like he's about to collapse. But keeps steady.
"Can I have a glass of water?" Garth ask while panting, covered in sweat.
"Of course" Sean laughs.
"You know you really can run" He continues.
"Yeah, I keep fit for a reason" Garth replies.
)))O(((
We get to the house and I look around. Its a super cozy little log cabin. Candle lit with a little brick fireplace with a shelf above. It has pictures on it and I'm eggar to go and look.
"I'll go get you your water. In the meantime, feel free to look around" Sean says.
I immediately go look at the photos, i see a bunch of pictures of a little redhead girl. Which must be his daughter.
But in the centre of the pictures is one of my mother...and me. I pick it up and stare blankly at it. A tear streams down my cheek. I wipe it off my face and turn around.
"She was beautiful" I exclaim.
"That she was" Sean says.
Another tear falls down my face. I look up at Sean.
"Do you have one of my brother?" I choke out.
Garth looks really bad. He's never liked seeing me sad or cry.
"Yes. I do" Sean says.
"Hold on" he continues.
Garth walks over and comes in with a tight hug. I continue to cry.
Sean comes out with a box full of pictures. Garth releases the hug. I choke on my own spit while wiping a tear off my face. Trying not to ugly cry.
"Take as many as you want" Sean says.
I mouth 'thank you'. He smiles and heads to the kitchen.
"You hungry?" Sean says.
"No, thank you" I choke out. I can barley talk.
"I'm okay as well. Thanks" Garth says.
I look through a bunch of pictures and smile, crying a little less. I pick up a silly one of my brother and dad. I laugh and show Garth. He smiles then sees a picture of me when I was little and looks at it.
"You were super cute" he says.
"Yeah, 'were'" I reply.
"Oh shut up, you still are you ass" he says.
I roll my eyes. Sean hands me a cup of tea and sits down. I smile but before I can thank him he says
"He's right, you were pretty adorable. You had this thing you would do with your nose, and your giggle was so cute. Not to mention you had beautiful hair"
"Why did you stop coming around?" I asked.
"After what happened, I was in a bad place. Me and your mother were inseparable, just like you and your brother" Sean says.
I stay silent. And continue looking at pictures. I put together a pile of photos.
"Can I take these ones?" I ask.
"I thought you would take more. Of course" he says and smiles.
"Thank you. We should go" I say and smile back.
Sean nods and grabs his coat. Garth takes my hand and holds it. Sean head over to a little barn. He comes out with another horse.
"You two can take this one" Sean says.
"Lilith, you've rode before right? You can ride her" he continues.
"Uhhh yeah but I'm super rusty" I say.
"Don't worry. Shes really laidback" he smiles.
I me and Garth get on and head home.
)))O(((
We get there and Dads cleaning up the work space. We all get off the horses. And he notices us. He comes running over when he's see Sean, he looks...angry??
"How dare you show your face here!!!" My dad yells and clocks Sean in the face.
"WHAT THE HECK?? DAD!?" I scream more confused then ever.
"Nice to see you as well, James!!" Sean replies. Now bleeding.
"What's your problem Sean!!?" My dad yells. I come in between my dad and Sean.
"Okay what the actual hell is going on?!" I say.
"He's the reason your mother and brother aren't here!!" My dad says.
"What are you talking about?!?" I say. I have no idea what's going on but this is getting nasty.
"It was an accident James!!! You know the last thing I would've wanted to happen was that! You know how much guilt i felt?!" Sean replies hold back his tears.
A tear runs down my dads face. He's more furious then I've ever seen him in my life.
"If someone doesn't explain what the fuck is going I'm gonna punch someone!" I say.
"Look, that night me and your mother drank...a lot. I decided to make food on the propane oven...and it caught fire, but instead of getting her and your brother out, I ran. At that time James was out getting a surprise for her..but when he got back she was trapped. Right then and there he watched his wife burn to her death...I cannot even tell you how guilty I am" he says.
"I...I need go" i say and go running into our little house attached to the Blacksmith. Garth follows.
I get to my room and slam the door. Ten seconds later Garth knocks. So I open the door.
"I'm so confused!!" I say.
"Yeah..me too" Garth says.
"Less confused as me you'd think" I say.
"I'm sure" he says.
"Why's my life so confusing??" I say.
Garth puts his hand on my back. I reach in for a hug. I never wanna let go.
The night goes by with me and Garth just sitting there, silently.
