Hilary's P.O.V.
Ben left at ten last night. I was glad that mom was sleeping so she wouldn't question me tonight, but I know she will tomorrow.
Next Day:
"Hilary, are you up? It's 9:30."
"Now I am. I'll be out in a minute."
"Well hurry up your breakfast is going to get cold."
Of course. Mom never makes breakfast unless she wants to talk about something.
When I walked out to the table I saw pancakes, eggs, toast, and bacon on a plate for me.
"Have a seat."
"What's all this about?" I asked knowing the answer.
"I can't cook breakfast for my daughter?"
"Not unless you have something to talk about."
Most families talk over dinner, mine do it over breakfast.
Weird?
Yes.
"You're right. I want to talk to you about last night."
She went on before I could say anything.
"I'm sorry that I haven't been the same. I know that I shouldn't take things out on you like I did the other morning. Now about last night, tell me what I walked into."
Ugh.
"We were just playing around." I said
"So kissing is playing around?"
"No."
So I told her all about the marshmallow thing.
"So you were going to put marshmallows in his face but he grabbed your hand resulting in you both to fall over, and he kissed you?"
Ding, ding, ding!! Ladies and Gentlemen we have a winner!
"Yes mom."
"Kids these days keep getting weirder and weirder. Then you also have a mess to clean up after we eat."
"Ok."
"Do I need to talk to you about-"
Before she could finish I chimed in.
"No mom! You don't need to talk to me about sex. It was just a kiss."
Then it went silent.
Oh how I wish Ben was here so he could explain it.
"So have you heard anything about Emma?" Mom asked
"Yes. Wait that's another thing. Why didn't you tell me about Emma? I had to find out from Sarah."
"How is Sarah?"
"Mom, don't change the subject."
It took her a couple minutes to answer.
"I didn't know how to tell you."
"So you decide to just not tell me? That's just great mom. Ever since dad and Jack died you have been distant. You keep pushing me away. The one day I thought you were going to change was my birthday. I was wrong. I get that you still miss them, and I do too mom. But you have to go on with life. I'm not saying to forget them because I won't. Maybe, just maybe if you talk about it you will feel better. Trust me, I did but I won't forget." I said
"I admit that you're right. It's just that three years later it's still hard."
"I know mom."
Oh how I wish I could tell her who the killer is...
"Do you have work?" I asked
"No."
"Well then go out with some friends. Stop thinking about the bad stuff. Open up to them. Yes, they probably know that it happened but if you talk about it then you'll feel better."
"Are you sure you don't want me to stay home?"
"Yeah. I think I'll invite Sarah over and we can have a lazy day and watch movies."
"No, don't do that." Mom said
"What? Why not?"
"Because you two need to go see Emma."
"Mom, we aren't allowed to. Her parents won't let us." I said
"I'll talk to them. You're going so go get dressed. I'll call Sarah also."
Maybe talking to her really made her think. Hopefully.
After I changed and got ready I just sat down.
My phone pulled me out of my thoughts.
*Hey, want to hang out tonight?* Ben
~I'm sorry I can't. I'm going to go see Emma.~ Hilary
*No don't be sorry. That'll be good for you.*
~I'm nervous.~
*Don't be. Tell me how it goes alright?*
~Yeah.~
"Hilary, are you ready? Sarah and her parents will be here in ten minutes." Mom said
"How did you get them to say yes?" I asked as I came out of my room.
"I just talked to them. I'm going to head out. Tell me how it goes?"
"Yes. I love you mom."
"I love you too sweetie."
Then she left.
The ride to the hospital was silent.
