“What do you want, kid?” The teacher said behind the desk, not bothering to look up from his book.
“This is my first class, teach.” I say in the same cold tone.
“Name?” He asks as he turns his page.
“Shadow.”
“Well, Shadow, take a seat in the back, between Danny and Zero. Roll call will begin after announcements.” He says and I sigh. Just my luck.
“You’re my age?” Danny whispers as I take a seat next to him.
“Sorry, I didn’t realize you owned the age 17. What are you gonna do, sue me for copyright?” I say sarcastically, rolling my eyes at him.
“You have a bad attitude.” He laughs and the teacher lifts his head to glare at us.
“This guy seems like a real prick,” I nod my head in his direction.
“Don’t let him hear you say that or he’ll have your head before I do,” Danny laughs.
“Uhh, what?” I ask, raising one eyebrow at him.
“Shut up,” he says nervously as he leans over and grabs his books.
“Danny and Shadow, is there a problem back there?” The teacher asks.
“No, Mr. Day.” Danny answers the same time I say, “I never had time to buy my books, I just moved here last night.”
“No books? Since you and Danny can’t seem to shut up, Zero, push your desks together.” Mr. Day says and Zero slowly lifts his head up and looks at me, shielding his eyes from the dim fluorescent lights.
“Hey,” he whispers and smiles slightly.
“Hey,” I nod and push my desk against his.
There’s a high pitch beep as the announcements come on. Mary talks about what’s for lunch, due dates, and lost and found item. The national anthem begins to play, and we all stand in silence. Not even before the song is over, Mr. Day impatiently begins roll call.
“And last but not least, Shadow.” Mr. Day calls as he marks on his clip board. “What’s your last name, kid?”
“Just call me Shadow, teach,” I mutter.
“Alright, Shadow and Zero No-Last-Name.” Mr. Day smirks and the whole class snickers.
“Oh, har har,” Zero mumbles and roll his eyes.
“Alright class, I forgot to make a lesson plan, so you know what that means!” Mr. Day smiles and the whole class cheers.
“What does that mean?” I whisper to Zero.
“It means self-study time, which secretly means do whatever the hell you want.” Zero smirks before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his iPod. He nods at me before sticking in his headphones and putting his head down.
