Chapter 2:
After four hours of sitting in the car while playing boring games to keep us entertained, we entered the campus parking lot; where tons of parents and students were clustered around trying to get to their destination. We pulled into the first empty parking spot we saw then headed over to the administration building for check-in.
We walked for about two minutes along a cobble stone path moving slowly as our gazes were set on the old architecture of buildings we passed. Eventually we came upon the administration building, father held the door open for Alexandria and I as we walked in. The chill of the air conditioner was immediately felt and cooled me down from the late August heat. I led father and sister to an empty table where a woman with a warm welcoming smile and greying hair sat.
“Hello sweetie can I have your full name please,” she asked while looking down at her list of names.
“Bethany Hayes,” the lady moved her pen down the list of names until she reached mine then proceeded to put a check mark in the box beside.
She then stood up and went to the table directly behind her to gather a pamphlet along with a couple of papers and a key.
“Okay so this,” she paused and handed me the pamphlet, “has a map of the campus as well as it lists all the times the buildings around here open and close. We also printed out extra copies of everyone’s schedule just in case,” she passed me both the papers, “one of the papers has all your classes listed while the other is a flyer for upcoming events around campus and last but not least here is your room key.” She handed me the key and looked back down at the original piece of paper with all the names, “It looks like you are in Walsh Hall at Upper Campus; lucky you,” She smiled a megawatt smile, “Any questions?”
“Uh why am I lucky in Upper Campus?” I wondered aloud.
“We have a Upper and Lower Campus with Upper Campus being livelier since sixty percent of our students are housed there; gives you a better chance of meeting more people,” she lowered her voice to barely a whisper, “It’s also where all the parties are held,” she paused then still in a whisper, “So I’ve been told,” ending with an awkward wink.
I blushed and looked away trying to brush off her mannerisms. “So with that I hope you have a great year and I welcome you to Boston College,” she said with a wave as we walked away.
The three of us left the building and started walking back towards our car, “Bethany what did that lady whisper to you?” My father questioned with one of his eyebrows raised.
“Ah I don’t really know she seemed kind of crazy,” I gave a forced uncomfortable laugh.
“I know what she said,” Alexandria piped in.
“Oh really,” father urged her to continue.
I covered her mouth with my hand just as she spoke resulting in muffles, Alexandria licked my hand and I retracted quickly to wipe her saliva off on my yoga pants, “She said Upper Campus is where all the parties are,” she spoke very quickly giving me a smirk as she finished.
I narrowed my eyes at her as my father chuckled, “Least we don’t have to worry about that right. Those aren’t your type of thing,” he looked at me expectantly for verification to which I only nodded.
Parties aren’t my type of thing, just like my father said, but sometimes I would like to know what it feels like to just let go and have fun for once. I was forced to grow up at a young age to which I focused solely on my studies in order to ensure my sister and myself a future. I’m not saying I don’t regret any of my decisions in high school but it would have been nice to go to a party; that’s if I was invited to one.
