When spring approached, another orphan was taken in by the church. Being named Nash by Father Orsi, their family grew another member.
Sel took on the role of the older sister of Nash and, another child who was in her toddler years, Recca. But even though they had kids to feed, the church was poor. Like mice, they are whatever they could get their hands on.
In this case, it was potatoes.
Day 1: Tatoes.
Day 2: Tatoes.
Day 3: Tatoes.
Day 65: Tatoes.
Day (n+1): Tatoes.
Tatoes were something they barely managed to afford. In fact, the father often begged for extras from others, like the next village over.
Children couldn't choose their parents. Not their environment, or what world they live in. Complaining would change nothing. Sel already knew this, but she couldn't help being fed up by eating tatoes only.
Even now, in the midst of dinner, everything was based on tatoes. Puddings, chips, baked, fried... somehow, everything was made purely with tatoes. They were really weird things.
Sel smiled. Internally, she was screaming and wanting to flip the table over.

'Down with this system!'
How nice it would be to really shout that. Still, she didn't. That didn't mean she was being stopped from attempting anything, though, because an idea came to her.
Necessity is the mother of invention, after all.
Rumor had it that there were a few wild boars wandering around the Hage village. They haven't attacked any people – but so close to human habitation that they might pose a threat to the villagers.
Some suggested that they should call for Magic Knights. However, as they were just peasants living in the Forsaken Realm, with nothing to their names, they haven't received any reply.
And that's how the story began.
"Asta, Yuno, can you come over here for a moment?" Sel waved to them. The two boys glared at each other, not knowing what she's going to do. Still, they did come.
"Wanna eat something other than just tatoes?"
"OF COURSEEE!!!"
The loud voice made both Yuno and Sel cover their ears. It seemed that Asta was also fed up with eating tatoes only. Yuno didn't say much about this matter, still Sel couldn't help noticing his glittering eyes.

'They are still kids though.'
Sel, rarely, had a self – satisfied smirk on her face.
oOo
During the night, all the bright airiness of the day faded, darkness fell over it like a velvet blanket. The night, was the time for adventurous hunt.
But it was for adults, or people with enough strength and brave.
Not for the kids.
Yet, there's a saying that "In a real, actual army, both the soldier and the scout are essential."
Sel stood behind the door of their room, listening. She heard Father's and Sister's voices. She listened intently. Voices came from the church hall. They were praying. It would at least take 2 hours.
