"Don't make me repeat myself!" he eyed the column furiously, most certainly thinking about destroying it if I don't comply.
I gulped and fear struck me like a lightning so I meekly stepped out of my protector's - aka the column's - shadow to face the livid king.
"Were you eavesdropping?" he questioned sternly.
I nodded while silently looking at the floor below. I have never even realized that the tiles alternating in color would represent a figure of some sort.
"At least you own up to it." he sighed, still angry. "And tell me, why would you do such rude and unladylike thing to your beloved king?"
The word 'beloved' made me want to laugh, but I held it back. I was afraid to look in his eyes so I was staring at his neck instead, mainly because it was at the level of my eyes.
"Well, my beloved king, it was completely unintentional." I emphasized the third word as much ad I could.
"I don't believe that."
"At least let me tell you how it happened."
He seemed hesitant for a second.
"Go on." he stated with a neutral expression."Thank you. So, I woke up before dawn and it was still dark. I didn't want to harrass you so I figured I could go for a walk in the palace and try to get used to where everything is. Now, this is when it all went wrong. I managed to find the throneroom instead of my room, I wanted to turn back but I heard someone talking. I had no clue what was happening so I decided to find it out... And you already know the rest." I started gasping for air because I didn't breathe while talking.
He was a little bit shocked, but half of his face suggested that he is dying from laughter on the inside. Then, it all bursted out and he didn't bother laughing at me at all.
"Talk about being incapable of living... I almost find it cute, with that helpless look on your face." he wiped off his tears and shook his head. Then he was back to the stern Gilgamesh he was before.
I was internally screaming because he called me cute and I almost blushed.
"Anything else you want to mention while defending yourself?"
"Yes, actually there are a lot of things I want to say."
"Out with it. I'm rather busy!"
"Busy with what, sitting on your throne and watching your lions while they are sleeping?"
"Watch it, you-"
"Yeah, right, sorry, it just slipped out." I smiled while rolling my eyes.
He examined me.
"I sincerely hope that not all thoughts you have left are intended to mock me. I don't really prefer that."
"Not at all." I reassured him. "First of all, oh my god, Gilgamesh, was that really Ishtar, the goddess herself?" I exclaimed in excitement.
He didn't quite understand my excitement and my interest towards the topic.
"Yes, it was. Why?"
"She literally asked you to marry her?" I asked with eyes like saucers.
"Yes, she did. Why is this so astonishing?"
"And did you really just reject her like she was some sort of mongrel?"
"Yes, I did." he gave up on asking information from me, he just impatiently ruffled his hair.
"Why though? Just... Why? I am not able to comprehend, she is a goddess!" I stared at him as if he had grown five heads. "To be honest, it may be beneficial for her later. At least you won't ruin her life and kill her-" I coughed in an attempt to distract him from what I have just said but he snapped.
He stepped one step closer and pushed me onto the column. It was cold and my back pressing onto it was not really comfortable."What are you implying?!" he leaned close to me, his blood red eyes gazing into mine. If he could kill with his eyes, I would be so damn dead right now. I didn't dare close my eyes so I just stared back at him in terror.
"Also, since when are you the one who asks questions here?!" he interrogated me even further. "We ain't switching roles, I'm the one who asks here!"
"Understood, my king..."
"Much better!" he didn't even back off, better still, he was leaning even closer as if he knew that it makes me more anxious. "So what do you say, would I be that terrible of a husband?"
I gulped slowly, and I could feel that he is analyzing my face.
"No, obviously not. You would be an amazing husband!"
"How nice of you to compliment me like that! Who would have ever known that you can be so nice!" he ran his fingers through my hair gently.
"Who would have ever known that you can be so gentle." I retorted.
"Well of course I can be gentle! You just told me I would be a great husband, a great husband has to know how to be gentle!"
"Okay, the point is yours." I sighed and started to feel strange in the position wer were currently. "Gil, weren't you busy?"
"The tense is incorrect, I still am."
"Uhm, with what?"
"You." he grinned cheekily.
"Okay... If you say so." I was baffled by the whole situation and his suddenly oh so charismatic behaviour. I can't say I don't like it though.
"Also, who told you that you can invent nicknames for me?" he suddenly increased the distance between us by backing away.
"I'm sorry, I thought you wouldn't mind."
"Well, okay, I may let you do it sometimes. But that means I have to call you by nicknames as well!"
"I thought my nickname is mongrel."
"No it is not, [Y/N], why would you think that?"
"I don't know, it was just an idea."
"A stupid one at that. Now, I have an important task for you. It needs to be handled with attention and care."
I nodded, not knowing what am I getting myself into. These past few events escalated so quickly, I didn't understand the sudden closure of the king, or his discussion with the goddess and confusion just took all over me.
