Chapter 13:These dam monsters

My POV
At the edge of the dump we found a tow truck that still had a full tank of gas Thalia drove she wasn't as shaken as everyone else Grover sat in the passenger seat while Percy say to my left and Zoe sitting to my right was leaning on my shoulder she seemed the most shaken Bianca sat in the bed of the truck I told them the skeletons are still out there we need to keep moving the truck ran out of gas at the edge of a river canyon that was just as well because the road dead ended Thalia got out of the truck and slammed the door one of the tires blew great what now? I scanned the horizon desert in all directions occasional clumps of barren mountains plopped here and there the canyon was the only interesting thing the river wasn't that big maybe fifty yards across green water and a few rapids but it carved a huge scar out of the desert the rock cliffs dropped away below us Grover said there's a path we could get to the river I told grover we could walk upstream Grover tried to argue a walk won't hurt us. We followed the river about half a mile to an easier slope on the shore was a canoe rental operation that was closed for the season but Percy left a stack of golden drachmas and a iou three canoes we need to go upstream Zoe said it was the first time she spoke since Talos Bianca agreed she hadn't spoke either the rapids are two swift leave that to us we put the canoes in the water Thalia pulled Percy aside and had a quick conversation with him we got into the canoes Zoe got into mine and everyone else got into there's I looked over the boat and saw naiads and we had a conversation and they pushed them upriver Grover fell into his canoe I heard Zoe grumble that she hate naiads a stream of water hit her in the face she yelled at them and pulled out her bow woah their just playing we sped up the river the cliffs looming up on either side of us you ok I asked her she started to tear up I though I lost you when Talos fell on you it's ok I'm here now we got to focus on saving Artemis she nodded and there was a dark shadow in the water even though there was no clouds Percy took out riptide and Zoe looked pain they chatted and I head the naiads tell us something we looked ahead and saw a dam the size of a football stadium.Hoover dam its huge we stood st the rivers edge looking up at a curve of concrete that looked between the cliffs the canoes rose back downstream because of the dams jets I heard Percy seven hundred feet tall built in the 1930s Thalia continued five million cubic acres of water Grover sighed largest construction project in the United States we stared at them how do you know all that Annabeth She likes architecture she was nuts about monuments spouted facts all the time so annoying I heard Percy I wish she was here we had to walk an hour before we found a path that led up to the road it came up on the easy side of the river then we straggled back towards the dam it was cold an windy on the top I asked Zoe if she wanted the Nemean lion pelt again I made it to where we could put it into one of our sacks she said no not right now grover sniffed around and we asked him how close they were he didn't know but the scent was from all directions we walked around and we found our way to the snack bar we all got food I looked at Bianca to see if she was doing all right she hasn't said a word in a while I told her to iris message nico later and tell him your alright maybe later we made jokes and were cracking up then I heard a noise mooooo me and Percy looked confused did I just hear a cow we looked at each other everyone listened then all head nothing they were looking at us are you guys ok we both told them to go ahead we'll be right in they gave us worried looks we jogged over to the north edge of the dam and looked over moo it as about thirty feet below in the lake but we could clearly see her and I saw a cow I looked at Percy is that bessie he looked at me how did you know I mean I am a son of Poseidon to I looked around there were kids running along the dam a lot of senior citizens some families but nobody seemed to be paying attention what are you doing here she sounded like she was warning us how did you get here Bessie swam in circles and head butted the dam moo she wanted Percy to go with her she was telling him to hurry I can't he told her my friends are inside.she looked with dad brown eyes moo and did a backflip and disappeared into the water we hesitated something was wrong she was trying to tell us that I saw Percy tense and I did to my hair on my arm bristled I looked down the road to the east and saw two men walking slowly toward us they wore gray camouflage outfits that flickered over skeletal bodies they pushed down kids and tone yelled hey the skeleton turned and looked at the ski they screamed and ran away we ran we saw more get out of the van as we bolted down the stairs and through the museum the security guard yelled at us to stop but we plowed right through him we ran through exhibits and ducked behind a tour group we looked for everyone else but we couldn't see them anywhere where was the dam snack bar stop the metal detector guy yelled there was no place to go but into an elevator with the tour group we ducked inside just as the door closed we'll be going down seven hundred feet the tour guide said cheerfully she was a park ranger with long black hair pulled in a ponytail and tinted glasses I guess she hadn't noticed that we were being chased don't worry ladies and gentlemen the elevator hardly ever breaks does this go to the snack bar Percy asked a few people behind us chuckled the tour guard looked at us something about her gaze made me tingle to the turbines young man the doors opened and the tourists went to the end of the hallway he tour guide said hey young man there is always a way out for those clever enough to find it the doors closed and the second elevator opened and we heard the chattering of skeleton teeth we ran toward the tourists in a tunnel of solid rock we came out on a u shaped balcony that overlooked the huge area fifty feet below enormous turbines were running I prayed that everyone else was okay they could be captured or eating snacks at the snack bar completely unaware of what's happening and stupid us we had trapped ourselves in a hole hundreds of feet below the surface we worked our way through the crowd we each had our riptide ready to strike we got out of the tunnel and we heard a sharp Chhh like the voice of a skeleton without thinking we both swing behind us the girl behind us yelped and dropped her Kleenex she asked why we were holding swords she was asking questions we could hear the skeletons get closer I quickly told her outlet situation she looked over our shoulders and said bathroom now we slipped inside the boys bathroom we heard the skeletons outside the door she made excuses and they left excitedly chattering there teeth we walked out and told her to forget everything's she saw she asked who were and then the skeletons turned around and we ran to the cafe we saw Thalia Grover Zoe and Bianca enjoying there food we Ned to leave we both said now but we just got our burritos Zoe and Bianca got up cursing in Ancient Greek their right look the cafe windows wrapped all around the observation floor we got surrounded and Grover yelled burrito fight and threw his burrito at the nearest skeleton and then everyone joined in what now we ran and we were outside and surrounded I saw Percy look at the statues I got an idea I told Thalia to pray to her dad he never answers she argued and finally did nothing happened I raised riptide and a shadow covered us it was a giant wing the skeleton shot at us and they bounced off the wings they swatted the skeletons and we asked them to help us please could use a stretch and the next thing I knew one of them grabbed Thalia Bianca and Grover the other grabbed me Zoe and Percy and we flew straight up over the dam and the river the skeleton warriors shrinking to tiny specks below us and the sound of gunfire echoing off the sides of the mountains.
