The day after, I was still in the aisles, because the newbie was still in training, but now I was supposed to help him out if he had any problems. And he had a lot of them.
The manager went home for the day, and left me with Mike, that was his name. Mike was 17, and terrified of the register, customers, and money in general. I don't blame him though, It can be scary at first.... But come on! Once he called me to check if he had to ask everyone who wished to buy alcohol for ID.
So to say that I was exhausted, and irritated that day, was an understatement.
I was finishing putting on prices, when I almost jumped out of my own skin.
-So are you Japanese, Kin-san?- Said someone in Japanese directly behind me.
-Jesus fucking Christ! Don't scare me like that.-I let out after turning around and, in relief, finding a familiar slim figure right behind me. I put a hand on my chest, to hold my heart down.
-I'm sorry.- He bowed his head, an apologetic look on his face, but a hint of a smile on it as well.
-It's fine, I guess...- I managed to breath out, after I collected myself.
Looking at him, before turning to continue, I scanned him. He was in shorts again, "How is he not cold?" Once again in a big hoodie, the hood covering his black hair, which looked fluffy, like he had just showered.
-So are you?- He smirked, following me, still on crutches.
-You're persistent, aren't you?- I smiled, stopping what I was doing to look at him, which made him stop as well. -Tell me what happened to your leg, and I'll tell you my last name.-
-I told you, I fell, It's not a lie.-
-It's not enough either.- I crossed my arms stubbornly.
-What do you want to know?- He asked innocently.
-When did you fall, what were you doing?-
-It was last week, I was training, you could say. There I answered you, what's your last name?-
I was squinting at him for a while, deciding if his answer was meeting the requirements, before saying,-Miyamoto- and turning around, with a smile on my face.
-So you are!- He lit up, like he won a bet or something.
-I was born in Japan.- I corrected.
He was about to say something, but was cut off by Mike yelling my name, loud enough for everyone in the street to hear it.
I rushed to the register, leaving Yuzuru behind.
-Go take a break Mike, I'll be here for a bit.- I sighted. Honestly it was easier to be alone than to babysit that kid.
He left without a second thought.
There was one customer I had to deal with and I was alone..... until he showed up. I literally forgot he was in the store.
-How long have you been in Toronto?- He asked, putting two chocolate bars at the register.
-Why do you ask?-
-I've been here a while, but I haven't explored much, so I thought maybe you knew if there was a Japanese restaurant here?- He said, while opening his wallet and handing me money.
-I haven't found a Japanese one nearby, there is one I like downtown, but there is also, like an Asian fast food thingy 10 minutes away from here.- I gave him his change and receipt.
He took them, put them in his wallet and grabbed one chocolate bar, all without looking at me. He opened it and took a bite.
-Thanks Kin-san.- He smiled at me, and turned to leave.
I was looking at the other bar left on the register, knowing very well, he left it for me, which made me all warm inside, but...
-Yuzuru-san!- I barely managed to let out.
-It's for you.- He said, without turning around, hopping on his crutches.
-I know, but I need the receipt then.- I said and filled the room with awkward silence.
He stopped in his track, and I was almost sure he got mad, but than I heard him laughing, throwing his head back. Then the turned around, smiling, tilting his head to one side.
-I see.- That was all he said, as he took the receipt out of his wallet. -And here I thought I was being smooth.- He laughed at himself.
I felt bad, and awkward, but also amused. God I was confused.
-Thank you, Yuzuru-san.- I bowed my head.
He just shook his head, smiled and left.
