CHAPTER FOUR:
SWEET WORDS
ARE EASY TO SAY.The arrival of the fourth basket was ignored by Alexa Cahill while Lucky was with her. Clint Barton saw it though, and he didn't ignore it at all.
"What's wrong, Alex?" Clint asked when he saw the reaction of the girl when he asked about the basket. Lucky rested over the girl's legs and started to lick her hands.
Alexa kept her eyes on the dog, letting out a sigh. "I have been receiving those baskets. It's already the fourth one and the only thing I noticed is that it's one per month, and it always comes with a note."
The archer looked the basket full of marshmallows and took the note between his fingers. "Are easy to say," he read with a frown.
The redheaded got up and walked to her fridge, where there were three other papers. "It makes sense when you read them all together. 'Sweet candy is nice to eat. Sweet words are easy to say.' What more could it be than a silly poem?"
"And who's leaving them?"
Alexa licked her lips, looking at the boy with a certain fear. She knew how he was going to react and, even though she was terrified, she still didn't want to leave her house. "I don't know."
"Alexa," Clint sighed. "This is serious. Someone is breaking into your house and you don't say anything?"
"Whoever it is, it's only leaving baskets full of candy. What's the harm of that?"
"That's how stalkers start, Alexa. You never know what's coming next," he said before passing his hands through his hair. "You're a known friend of the Avengers, you can easily become a target."
"You're exaggerating."
She knew he wasn't.
"It's enough. You're coming to the tower with us," Clint concluded.
The redheaded moved her head. "No! Tony said it was better I didn't live with you! Everyone knows the Avengers' Tower, that's a major target if you ask me."
"Not considering that we live there and it has security. You're here on your own, you don't have any form of defending yourself and-"
Alexa sighed. "They won't want me living there."
She was lying, though. She was certain that none of her friends would have a problem with her living with them. Even less if she was in hazard. The actual problem was that she didn't want to admit that the basket's problem was making her paranoic.
Even less she wanted to confront Tony.
She promised to him that she would tell him whatever problem she encountered. But still, she never told him about it. She talked with the Maximoff' twins, thinking that maybe it could be Pietro. She also talked to Steve Rogers, her best friend, and with Clint Barton, who she thought of as a brother.
Nevertheless, she knew that Tony would be hurt if he was one of the last on knowing. And, probably, he would be mad at her.
