cody hurried out of her apartment building and quickly made her way down the street, dodging tired adults in high heels and fancy suits who had just gotten off of work and were trying to make their way home or wherever they were going to do god knows what, cody didn’t care. all she cared about at the moment was getting to her dumb group counseling session that she was already late to.

when cody was in her freshman year of high school, her mom packed her things and left cody and her dad to go be with this rich doctor she met when she went to england for a business trip. cody didn’t take it very well, she became really depressed and she got herself into some really bad shit. her dad didn’t notice that she was slowly becoming addicted to drugs she couldn’t afford, all he noticed was how disconnected she became from everyone and decided she needed help. so he signed her up for group therapy that was for kids between the ages thirteen and nineteen which most definitely wasn’t going to help her get out of the giant hole she dug herself.

she arrived fifteen minutes late to the small church at the edge of town where the therapy session was held which caused everyone to look at her when she walked in. cody fucking hated churches.

“well, it’s nice of you to join us, cody. have a seat,” linda, the “therapist” told her. cody sat down in one of the uncomfortable, brown plastic chairs and pulled her feet up onto her chair, tucking them underneath her. cody had already missed the introductions where you state your name and say why you’re there and linda wasn’t going to make her do it since she didn’t want her to feel “awkward” being the only one saying it. linda started going around the circle asking about everyone's progress and how they were feeling. this tiny blonde girl named ella was talking and cody was picking at her nails, trying to tune out ella’s shaking voice as she tried not to cry over whatever happened to her that week when the door slammed open and a tall boy wearing one of those long, nice, fleece coats breathlessly stumbled into the room.

“sorry,” he mumbled pulling out his headphones. “i got lost.” linda sighs and points to the circle.

“have a seat. actually, how about since you and cody were both late you do your introductions?” michael sits down right next to cody while she sighed heavily and pulled the sleeves of her gray and black striped, oversized sweater down, covering her hands completely. “cody, you go first.” cody stands up, playing with the sleeves of her sweater as she talks

“my name is cody grey, im 17 and im here because my dad forced me into it when my mom left three years ago.” she sits back down, bringing her legs up again and focused on the new boy in the fleece coat who was now standing up and rocking back and forth on his heels.

“um, my name is michael clifford, im 18 and im here because im tired of being sad all the time.” he sits back down and runs a shaky hand through his messy, black and purple hair.

“thank you michael, cody. now, tracy, how have you been?” and cody tunes out everyone again picking lint off of her black jeans until she feels someone nudge her.

“cody, it’s your turn,” linda says, sounding slightly annoyed at the fact that cody wasn’t paying attention again.

        “i’ve been good.”

“just good? are you feeling any happier than last week.”

“i am just as happy as i was last week, and the week before, and a month ago, and three years ago.”

“cody, you’ve been coming for three years and for these three years you haven’t said a word about how your mother leaving has effected you. you’re not going to get any better if you refuse to talk about it.” cody shrugs and linda sighs for probably the tenth time since cody walked into the room.
