"um, hi?" cody said, extremely confused as to why michael was talking to her.
"cody, right?" michael asked. cody nodded slowly. "i'm michael. you look cold, are you cold? do you want my coat? you can borrow it until your ride gets here."
"no, no. i'm fine, my dad should be here soon. i'll be fine." cody looked toward the street when she heard a car come speeding toward them in hopes that it was her father. it wasn't. they awkwardly stood by each other, cody wishing her dad would hurry up and get here so she could escape michael while michael wished she would say something to break the uncomfortable silence.
michael watched cody shiver for ten minutes before shrugging off his coat and draping it around her shaking body.
"michael, take your jacket back. i'm fine." cody started to hand michael his coat and he took it back, only to wrap it around her body again. cody sighed and sat down on the curb, pushing her arms into the sleeves of michael's coat and brought her hands up to her mouth, trying to warm them up with her breath. michael sat down next to her and pulled out his phone to keep him occupied while they waited.
another five minute passed and michael was getting colder by the minute and he just wanted to go home but he didn't want to leave cody alone.
"how far from here do you live?" michael asked.
"not too far. my dad's usually here by now, i don't know what's taking him so long." cody phone beeps in her pocket and she pulls it out, checking the notifications. she sighs heavily and starts to take michael's coat off again.
"what are you doing? i already told you that you can keep the coat on." he tells her, grabbing her hands to stop her from taking it off. she quickly pulls her hands back and shoves them into the pockets of michael's coat.
"my dad's not coming and i have to walk. i'm giving your coat back since you'll freeze to death if you have to walk home without it."
"i'm not letting you walk home alone at this hour. i'll walk you." he stands up and sticks his hand out for cody to grab. she looks at it for a minute before grabbing it and standing up.
"it's fine. i've done it plenty of times before." cody starts to walk away and michael jogs a little to get next to her.
"well, i'm going to walk you home like the gentleman i am." cody rolls her eyes.
"i think you should put red in your hair," cody says, looking up at michael.
"really?" michael reaches up and runs a hand through his hair, looking back at cody.
"yeah. i mean, the purple with the dark looks good but i think red would look even better."
"i'll keep that in mind."
by the time they reach cody's apartment, michael is freezing. he regrets giving cody his coat and he cant wait until she gets inside so he can put it back on.
"so, i guess i'll see you tomorrow at group then?" cody asks. michael scoffs.
"i'm not going back there, are you kidding me?"
"oh c'mon michael, it's not that bad."
"yes it is, lisa-"
"linda."
"yeah, linda, whatever." he waves his hand and rolls his eyes. "she's forcing us to talk about our shit in front of a bunch of fucked up teenagers who are probably gonna go off the next day and tell all their friends about it. it's stupid and it's not like she cares anyway. she's only there because she's getting paid."
"why did you come today?" cody asks, tilting her head up to see michael better.
"because i'm sad."
"yeah, but why?"
"that, my friend, is a story for a different day," michael smirks. cody rolls her eyes and shrugs off michael's jacket.
"thanks for letting me wear it. you better put it on, you're probably freezing." cody unlocks the door and steps inside.
"hey, wait," michael grabs her arm and she turns around, tucking her messy hair behind her ear. "let me see your phone."
"why?" she asks, pulling it out of her pocket and unlocking it.
"because." he holds out his hand and she places her phone in his hand. cody watches as he pulls out his own phone and unlocks it, his fingers move quickly as he types out whatever he's typing and waits for him to give her phone back. "here you go," he smiles at her and starts to walk away. cody looks down at her phone and smiles.
