Y/n POV
I hated him. I hated him because he was so perfect. And that he was so aware of it. He would boast and brag about himself, but would brush off compliments without a second thought. Girls would fawn over him endlessly, just to be ignored. Of course, I was never one of those girls. I'd never even had a boyfriend before. Boys were, for the most part, a waste of my time. They were also quite intimidated by me. Except for the one and only Jack Kelly. Which only gave me another reason to hate him.
Ever since eighth grade when I had come to NorthEast High School, Jack had been flirting with me. Most of the other boys were either too shy or too awkward to talk to me. Not Jack. He had the confidence and the cockiness to match my own. Which is why my friends teased me about him constantly. I didn't mind it much, as long as no one took it too far. If I didn't have a list of reasons to hate him, we would have been a perfect match. I was head cheerleader, he was  head of the football team. I was the most popular girl he was the most popular guy. We were basically in the same friend group, as some of my friends were dating some of his. Although we had never become more than acquaintances, at least not until the summertime.
During the last month or so of school I noticed Jack changing. He had become taller and more muscular from football, his face slimmed out a bit giving him a sharp jawline, and his hair grew out to just the right length. It wasn't just his appearance that changed. He seemed more humble. He stopped teasing me and asking me out as a joke.
Because of this we gradually started becoming friends and by the time summer started, we were hanging out all the time. Always with the rest of our friends, but we'd end up sitting next to each other or paired up somehow. My list of reasons to hate him dwindled until there was only one thing left.
I was in love with him and I was 98% sure he didn't love me back. That's why I kept all of my feelings to myself.
It was early August and I had spent the day at my friend Lexi's beach house. The rest of our friend group, including Jack, was there too. We had finished dinner and the boys, Tyler, Jack, Owen, and Kai, were throwing a football around in the water. Me, Lexi, Anna, and Shayla were sitting around a picnic table talking.
"Dang, Tyler looks good." Lexi said.
Tyler and Lexi has started dating in June. Shayla was dating Owen, leaving Anna and I the only single girls of the group. Anna had a huge crush on Jack but was too scared to tell him.
"So does Jack." Anna sighed wistfully looking in his direction.
I shot daggers at her and Lexi said, "I think y/n is jealous."
"Jealous? Of what?"
"That Anna is checking out Jack when we all know you like him."
"Woah, woah, woah, who said I like Jack?"
"No one, but everyone can tell. It's the way you act around him and the way he looks at you."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I'm going to go see if anyone wants to take a walk with me."
I was mad because Lexi was right.  At least she was right about my feelings for Jack, not about his for me.
"I'm going to walk to the pier and watch the sunset, does anyone want to come?" I yelled to the boys.
"I will. Just let me get changed first." Jack
said.
He ran into the house and came back a couple minutes later with joggers and a t-shirt on.
"That's were my sweatshirt went." He said pointing at me."
"Sorry I didn't know it was yours."
"It's fine, it looks better on you anyway. You can just keep it."
My face felt hot and I was glad my sunburn disguised the blush I felt creeping up my face. We walked side by side in silence until Jack said, " I need your help."
"With what?"
"Um... promise you won't say anything until I'm done ok?"
"Got it."
He looked nervous which made me uneasy. I had almost never seen Jack like this before.
"So you know Rachel Kall? Well her parents are friends with my parents and they went out of town for a couple days this Summer. So my parents made her stay in my apartment since my Aunt is living with my parents right now."
Rachel goes to our school and is what you would probably consider a nerd. Not because she was super smart or anything, but because of her love for everything anime and her small group of anime-loving friends. She was nice and all, just a little weird. She was also one of the many girls who was practically glued to Jack at all times. He went on to explain that Rachel was starting to believe her and Jack had become an item because of the time they were spending together, when really it was just their parents.
"This is where you come in. I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend."
" Wha-"
"I just need to get rid of Rachel, but I can't just walk up to her and say, 'The only reason I hang out with you is because my parents made me.' So will you do it?"
"Fine, but we're going to need to make some rules."
