Y/n POV
It's been a week since Jack said all that stuff to Rachel and we still haven't talked about what's next. I've been thinking a lot about what I want and I've decided I have to get over Jack. I'm done being hung up on this boy.

When I get to school the next day Jack is nowhere to be seen. It's Monday so everyone is moving slow, including me. I'm still in the hallway when I hear the bell ring. I run to class and sit in the first open seat I see. I realize I'm sitting next to a boy I don't recognize. I'm not going to lie, he's cute. The teacher pairs us up with the people we're sitting next to.
"Hey, I'm Antonio. We're partners I guess." He whispers while the teacher is giving directions.
"I'm Y/n." I whisper back.
Antonio is surprisingly good at science so we are among one of the first groups to finish.
"So where did you move from?"  I ask.
"Highland, it's like 20 minutes away from here."
"Wait, do you play football?"
"Yeah, I'm number 14."
"No way! I've seen you play before! You're super good."
"Thanks! 14 is my lucky number so that helps a little. I'm going to need all the luck I can get if I want to make the team here."
"You'll do great!"
We continue to talk until the period is over. Talking to Antonio was fun, but there was something off about him. Like he wasn't telling me something.

Jack isn't waiting for me at my locker before lunch, so I head to the cafeteria without him. When I walk in Jack is already sitting, surrounded by his friends. One of them being Antonio.
"Hey!" I say cheerfully. "Where have you been! And I didn't know you two were friends. What else are you hiding from me?" I ask Jack, pretending to be suspicious.
"I woke up late. And I've known Race since we were kids." Jack says.
"Race?" I question.
"It's my nickname." Antonio-, Race says.
"Cute." I reply sitting down.
"That's not fair you never call me cute." Jack whines.
"Fine, you're cute."
"Say it like you mean it."
"I do mean it."
"So are you two dating?" Race asks.
Before either of us can answer The fire alarm starts blaring and the sprinklers spit water at us. A couple seconds later the principle starts talking over the loudspeaker.
"Attention everyone this is a false alarm. The current situation we are in is a result of Mrs. Topin burning her lunch in the teacher's lounge. Please proceed to the parking lot in an orderly fashion."
The janitors have yet to turn the sprinkler system off so everyone rushes towards the door, trying to stay dry.
"That was uncalled for." Jack says when we make it to the parking lot.
His hair is damp and messy. I reach up and run my hand through, tugging lightly. He closes his eyes and sighs contently.
"Mmh, that feels nice." Jack sits down in front of me and I play with his hair. So much for getting over him. It takes the principal a good hour to figure out what's going on. In the meantime I get to know Jack's friends.
There's Davey, who is kinda like the mother hen to the other boys.
There's Race, who takes no shame in flirting with everyone and everything.
Then there's Spot who seems like he has a thing for Race. Whenever Race tries to flirt with Spot he starts blushing and stuttering a lot, which is very entertaining. I soon feel like a part of their little family.
"Okay! Since most of the classrooms have been drenched and will take at least twelve hours to dry, we will have an early dismissal." The principal announces.
Jack offers to drive me home, and I find myself in charge of the aux cord again.
"So what song today?" I ask, scrolling through a playlist we made together.
"Actually we should talk." Jack says. He looks serious and it makes me nervous.
"Um, ok."
"So, I've been thinking. Since I told Rachel about... everything, there's really no point in doing this anymore."
It takes me a minute to realize what's happening. He's ending it. I look at Jack and study his face. His jaw is clenched and his eyes are focused on the road. Neither of us has said anything for almost five minutes.
"Y/n?" Jack says pulling into my driveway and glancing at me. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Everything's fine." My voice sounds cold and harsh. I hate it.
I get out of the car and slam the door behind me. Jack calls my name but I block it out. Somehow, I hold my tears back until I'm inside. Then I let the sobs take over my body. My mind is going blank. I literally can't think.
I let myself fall so in love with a boy that doesn't love me back. I feel pathetic. It wasn't even real. Those four words are repeating themselves over and over again in my head.
Something finally registers in my brain. Jack is knocking on my door, saying my name. Then he's beside me, his arms outstretched. I fall into them without hesitation, the same way I fell in love with him.
