*time jump a few hours after the last chapter bc i'm lazy*before everyone left mike's house, mike and will disappeared upstairs, leaving max, eleven, lucas and dustin alone downstairs. eleven smiled to herself as she looked at max.
mike and will didn't come back down for the rest of the time they spent there, so at 11am, they got their bags and started to leave. lucas and dustin biked home, and eleven used the home phone to ring hopper. max watched as el talked into the phone.
"max, would you like a lift home with us?" she asked, midway through her conversation on the phone, turning her head away and facing max. max looked down at her shoes, not liking to admit that she didn't actually have another way to get home. she nodded and smiled timidly. "yes please." el said back into the phone, presumably answering hopper's question, before hanging up and putting it back on the wall.
"he'll be here in about 5 minutes." eleven said to max with a nervous smile. max smiled back. you could cut the tension in the room with a knife. the boys had gone, and it was just them. somehow, it felt different than just an hour ago when they were happily talking on the sofa. you could see the nervousness on both girl's faces, despite how hard they tried to hide it. they sat on the stares and waited for hopper to arrive. they didn't say a word, just stared into each other's eyes. el noticed the small green specks in max's ocean blue eyes, a beautiful shade of blue that sent shivers down her spine.
their gaze was broken by hopper honking the horn of his truck outside the door. they quickly yelled goodbye to mike's mom before heading out of the door. they chatted quietly in the back of the truck as hopper drove max to her house. when they arrived, max thanked hopper for driving her, said bye to el with a beaming smile and headed into her house. el dreamily gazed at the back of max's head, watching as her hair glinted in the sunlight. she smiled to herself as hopper drove off.
once they'd been home for about an hour, the phone rang. hopper answered it.
"el! it's for you." he called through.
"who is it?" she asked, hoping it was max.
"mike." hopper said. el sighed, and reluctantly walked through to take the phone off him. hopper left the room to let them speak.
"hi mike." eleven said shortly. she knew he was supposed to be her boyfriend, but she was starting to wonder if she ever liked him like that in the first place. the more she thought about it, the more she doubted it. she thought she was in love. she thought it was how she was supposed to feel. then she met max, and she felt everything she thought she had felt with mike.
"hi el..." mike replied, his words trailing off into nothing. "we need to talk."
"okay." el replied. "about what?"
"i think..." el heard mike take a deep breath over the phone line. "i think we should break up."
"okay!" el said brightly, before realising what she'd done. "oh... um.. i mean..." she tried to put on a pretend (and rather unconvincing) sad voice "why?"
"well... i feel like we just don't... click... anymore. and i think i like somebody else."
"ok well, i'm happy for you, mike." el said. they carried on their conversation for a while before el hung up the phone, but instead of going back to her room, instead, she dialled another number. she was going to do something. something big. the phone rung as she hoped the person she was calling would pick up. she heard them answer.
"hello?" they said down the phone.
"hi." el said. "can you come over?"
"sure." max said from the other end of the line.
