max jumped awake as the noise of someone banging on the front door echoed around the originally quiet house. she watched el sit up in bed and rubbed her eyes groggily. they heard hopper leave his room to go see who was at the door.
"do you think it's-?" el asked, but before she could finish her question, the door burst open and an angry voice boomed through the house.
"where is she?" the angry, slurred voice yelled.
"it's him." max whispered. her face was painted with fear.
"put that down. this is my house, i said PUT THAT DOWN!" hopper yelled.
"he has a gun." eleven whispered back.
"get behind the door." max said, voice trembling. the girls rushed to the door and sat behind it, barricading it shut as best as they could. since the door didn't have a lock, this was the best way to keep them out.
"he doesn't know we're here yet." max said quietly. "if we stay quiet he won't find us."
eleven could hear max breathing rapidly and the two men screaming at one another through the wall. she ran her thumb up and down max's hand, trying to calm her.
suddenly, a gun shot rang though the cabin, and a hole was pierced at the top of elevens door. max closed her eyes and a tear gently rolled down her face.
"they're in there!" maxs stepfather yelled. he stormed over and tried to push the door open, but he was unable to even budge it. max opened her eyes and saw eleven sitting about a metre away from the door, hand put in front of her. she watched in awe as blood trickled steadily from el's nose and the door remained closed.
"what the fuck?!" he screamed. he shot the gun again, piercing another hole in the door, yet el didn't even flinched. the only thing going through her mind was keeping max safe.
they heard a bottle smash and the heavy footsteps move gradually away from the door. eleven released the door.
"watch your back jim." the drunken man slurred. he tripped out of the door and soon they heard the car sped off dangerously fast from the drive.
max got up from the door and stumbled into elevens arms, and before she could try and stop, uncontrollable tear were streaming down her face. she laid her head on el's lap and cried silently. eleven stroked her soft red hair.
"it's gonna be okay, maxie." she whispered. "i promise you. it's all gonna be okay"
hopper knocked on the door.
"come in." el called.
"you girls alright?" he asked, concerned.
eleven nodded her head slowly.
max sat up. "is he gone?"
"yeah. he's gone, kid. you're safe here until your mom gets home alright. if he comes back i'll take him down to the station."
"a-are you gonna do anything bad to him?" max asked quietly.
"well we could arrest him now, but i'm gonna let him off this time because i'm pretty sure-"
"billy." max whispered. "you can't arrest him. if billy finds out it's my fault, i'm dead."
"yeah, that's what i thought." hopper replied. "right i'm gonna wait out here for a bit and make sure he doesn't come back. if you girls need anything, come get me."
the girls nodded and hopper left, closing the door behind him. the girls climbed back into el's bed.
max turned to face el, before grabbing a tissue from the bedside table and holding el's face.
"stay still." she said. very carefully, max wiped away the blood down el's nose, and then threw the bloody tissues in the bin. "my brave girl." she said, lost in el's chocolate brown eyes.
"if it meant i'd keep you safe, i would fight every monster in the world." el replied.
they lied back down, facing each other in el's double bed. max snaked her arm around el's waist and they stared into each other's gorgeous eyes.
eleven reached out and held max's cheek in her hands. she could sense that max was still scared.
"you're okay maxie." she whispered. "we're gonna be okay."
