Chapter Thirty One

The Traitor

Abby and Cedric walked back together, silent. Cedric hoped she hadn’t noticed his mark, and he felt bad that he didn’t tell her about his past. As Abby and Cedric ate lunch together, Ghost approached them, along with someone else Cedric never thought he’d see again.

“Isaac!” Cedric exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to deliver a message to our troops hiding in the city, and thought I should come here, as Ghost had told me about it before.”

Cedric noticed how well Isaac spoke now. His accent was still there, but his pattern of speech had improved dramatically.

“I see.” Cedric paused. “You aren’t going to try to take over Yashu, are you?”

“No, no, not quite yet. But Cedric, I have heard quite a few words about you since we last met. You never told me you were the most wanted man in your country.”

Cedric chuckled, but it was almost an uncomfortable laughter.

“I’ve also heard other interesting things about you. Shall we take a walk and discuss them?”

Cedric stood. “Sure.” He looked over at Abby. “You don’t mind?”

“Of course not.” Abby laughed. “Go ahead.”

Cedric joined Isaac and they began strolling around. Isaac was gazing at the ceiling in wonder.

“Your country is full of marvels.” He commented.

Cedric wasn’t sure how to reply.

“But it also has many injustices, as I’m sure you’re aware of. Especially as a member of a rebellion.”

“You notice them from time to time.” Cedric replied.

“I have heard that you are an escaped servant.”

“That would be because it’s true.”

“May I see your mark?”

Cedric took off his glove and wordlessly flashed the man his mark before replacing its cover. He wondered why he couldn’t do that to Abby.

“Interesting. Then what else have I been hearing is true?”

“My guess would be everything.”

“Your king is really a magic weaver?”

“Yes.”

“And you’re the key to dethroning him?”

“I guess you could say that.” Cedric didn’t really like where this was going. He felt as though Isaac was planning to kidnap him or something of the sort. What was Isaac’s intention? Where was he going with this?

Isaac observed him as though he could read Cedric’s thoughts. “We may be on different teams,” Isaac stated, “but we are still on the same side. We both want your king gone.”

“I don’t care for your tactics.” Cedric sniffed. “I don’t think you should endanger innocent people.”

“This way is easiest. In the long run, it will save lives.”

Cedric frowned. “What if the king was overthrown or died? Do you honestly believe that your country would stop attacking us?”

“We are not the villains in this situation. Your country attacked ours first. You don’t understand what your soldiers did to out lands. Our people.” He shivered. “We only fought back. We only want to end this war. Your king will not offer us a treaty. So we are forced to continue on until he backs down.”
