Chapter 5

Val was looking at Jonah’s face, putting ointment on some of the deep cuts as Lilly sat on the couch. Now she was extra confused. IT seemed like Jonah was going to kiss her in the warehouse, but at the last moment he had pulled away from her. She didn’t even understand why she wanted him to kiss her. Maybe it was because at that moment emotions were running high, and both he and she had had adrenaline pumping through their bodies.

“I’m going home.” she went to leave but Jonah jumped in her path. “Get out of my way Jonah. I’ve had enough of you for tonight.”

“Are you really going to talk to the guy that just saved your life like that?” he pushed her away from the door, and grabbed her shoulders so she was facing Val.

“We need to talk about this Lilly. You could have been killed tonight.”

“I was killed tonight. What part of that don’t you understand? I died, and I’m still here!” Val gave a heavy sigh. “What now? Are you going to tell me that now I can’t leave this room? You people are unbelievable!” Irritated and angry Lilly stomped back over to the coach she had previously been sitting on.

“So what happened?” Val asked her nicely.

“I died, and this weird lady talked to me.” she stared straight ahead, not wanting to look at the woman next to her. “I really don’t have time for this; I start my first job in the morning.”

“Yes because a job is so much more important than taking care of destiny.” He said with a very sarcastic tone. Sometimes Lilly just wanted to hit him over the head with a brick.

“Jonah quit it. Can’t you see the girl has been through enough tonight? She doesn’t need you adding on your sarcastic comments as well.”

“Look at my face! Does it look like my face has been through enough yet? I think I’m aloud to make a few snide remarks here and there.” Lilly and Val both rolled their eyes at him. “Don’t give me that look ladies.” Lily felt a bus go off in her pocket.

“Hey gurrrrl! What are you doing?” Lilly jumped for joy when she saw that it was from her best friend Sally. She seriously wanted some normality in her life at the moment.

“I’m being held captive. Save me!”

“Where are you?”

“I’m at the hillside apartment. It’s down the street from my house.”

“Be there soon! Be ready!” Lilly knew that her friend was close. She needed to get out of here quick. Maybe if she said that she had to go to the bathroom they would let her go, and she could jump out of the window.

“I need to go to the potty room.” She quietly said, not wanting to make any change in the pitch or tenor of her voice. “Please.”

Jonah looked at her inquisitively. All she could think was ‘please don’t catch on you freaky little cat man.’ “Fine. It’s down the hall, second door on the right. Hurry back, there are a lot of things we need to talk about.” He pointed to the hallway on his left.

Lilly walked quickly to the bathroom, almost running there as she picked up on a car pulling up to the entrance of the building. Sally sat in the front seat with someone other person that Lilly didn’t know, but being the polite person that Sally was she quickly introduced him as her new ‘friend’ Mark.

“That’s all cool and all but can we please get a move on? I’m trying to leave!” she looked out the side window to see Jonah’s head sticking out of the bathroom window a few floors above her. “GO! He saw me!”

They sped off quickly, leaving nothing but dirt in the path. Eventually they reached Lilly’s home which wasn’t exactly the right hiding place because it was only a few miles away, and she knew that Jonah would look there first. Sally said good bye to Lilly and went on her way, promising that she would text her tomorrow.

Lilly was trying her very best to be quiet and sneak up to her room, but she never made it past the stairs. Her mother swiveled around in her office chair demanding to know where she had been.

“I was out with Sally. We were just walking around downtown. Don’t worry about it, I’m practically an adult.” Her mother gave her one of those looks that said don’t let it happen again, and Lilly left quickly.

Lilly sat on the edge of her bed trying to think about everything that had happened tonight. A man had tried to kill, he succeeded, then she came back to life, and now she was starting to like a man that irritated the crap out of her. Maybe she just needed to accept it, this was her life now. But what about school, what about her friends and mother?

Maybe she could tell Sally but that was it, she couldn’t tell her mother because she would think that Lilly was crazy and probably put her in an insane asylum. What was she going to do about Jonah?

Whether she wanted to believe it or not they had almost kissed tonight. The feeling that came off of him in that moment had been amazing. She felt like she had been on top of the world in that moment.

“Why did you run?” speak of the devil.

“I just needed some air.” She turned to him, cuts still clearly there, and face as hard as stone. He was always mad at her for anything she did. Why couldn’t he be nice to her all the time, rather than when she died.

“After tonight air is the last thing that you need. You need to stay somewhere where I can keep an eye on you. I’m the only protector you have in this world, so you better start listening to me.”

“No, you listen to me buddy. I’m the protector of all of you, and if you think that you can just push me around like how you are right now, then you are sorely mistaken. I won’t be taking any orders from you, from here on out we are going to start doing It my way.” She was in his face, finger almost touching his slightly crooked nose.

He looked down at her, expression never changing. “I had hoped that I would have to use our special connection against you but you have left me no choice.” He leaned forward then. She could smell his minty fresh breath every time he breathed out.

His hand came up and held the back of her head tightly. Placing his lips against her, he slowly asked for entrance. At first she didn’t know what she was doing but he seemed to be okay with that. Her hands came up and roped around his neck, only deepening the kiss even more.

The sliding of lips and tongue were almost too much for her to take. Her knees buckled as fireworks went off behind her eyes, and he caught her, pulling her against his hard chest. He released her but only for a second so he could kiss down her neck and revisit the mark that he had left on her the night before.

She shuddered and he knew exactly where he stood in her life. Right dab smack in the middle of it all, he was there in her heart whether she wanted it or not. He released her then, pulling away so that he could look into her eyes.

Groggy and disoriented she clung to him. Not wanting to let her go but knowing that he had to he laid her back onto the bed and covered her with a blanket. Hey eyes opened and she just looked at him. He waited for her response, but nothing came.

When he reached the edge of the window, about to jump, she spoke. “I know what happened to you Pharaoh.” That made him stop and come back to her.
