Chapter 4
“What do you mean he’s dead?” Lilly had one hand on her heart and the other on the door behind her. Val was still looking at the man trying to see how fast his death had occurred. Jonah walked in then, he didn’t have his shirt on. Lilly was thankful that he had at least boxers around his waist.
“What happened?” he asked Val. Val turned to him with a sad look on her face.
“She kissed him.” Jonah turned to ward Lilly. “Did you even think to tell her Jonah? Did you think that this might have been important to tell a teenage girl that if she kissed a human that it would die? That’s important to mention Jonah!”
“So he died because I kissed him?” That would have been nice to know before Lilly had kissed the now dead man. How could a simple kiss kill someone that soon? “How come you didn’t tell me that? Oh my God, I killed someone!”
“You are so not turning this around on me! Maybe you should have let Val explain about the Mau before you went out clubbing. You’re too young to be out doing that anyways. I told you I felt like something bad was going to happen, but did you listen to me? Of course you didn’t listen!” Lilly was crying now, sobbing actually. She felt like her world was crumbling around her.
First she find out that she isn’t a human, but a Mau, a creature that can transform from human likeness to a cat. Then Val tells her that she is the protector of their race, and now she just killed someone by kissing them. How was all of this happening to her in a span of a few short days?
“Jonah stop it. She didn’t know that something like this could have happened. It’s your fault that this man died; you should have told her before she had the opportunity.”
“You can’t put all of this on me! It’s as much your fault as it is mine.” Jonah and Val were both mad. Neither of them willing to give each other the upper hand in this argument. Lilly couldn’t help think that this whole argument was her fault. Maybe if she had never become the protector this wouldn’t have ever happened.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I can’t be who you want me to be. I’m sorry.” She let one last tear fall before running out the door and down the hall. It was seconds later that she heard the door open. Her eyes were blurry and she could hardly breathe.
“Lilly wait, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said any of that.” He was running after her still, but she kept on her path.
“Go away Jonah!” she had to get away from all of this. She had to make it better. She had to leave. Lilly rounded the corner of the building. A hand slid around her face, and covered her mouth. She tried screaming but it didn’t help.
“Make a sound and I stab you right now, right here.” a thick and sharp voice sad from behind her. She felt the sharp curved edge of blade touch her side.
“Lilly where are you?” Jonah said from the front of the building. “Lilly please I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any of it. It’s just so hard for me to be what Val wants, especially around you.” She heard him shuffle then walk back into the building.
“If you make any noise I will kill your little friend.” The thick voice said again. Lilly didn’t want anything to happen to Jonah. The man dragged her back behind a fence and down some stairs. It was dark outside and Lilly could feel her eyes showing. They let her see perfectly in the night with the exception that there was a yellowish glow around everything.
Finally the man released her to the ground where she stumbled around until finally popping up. “What do you want from me?”
“I don’t want anything from you, except your life.” She noticed that it was the same thickly muscled man from the club, the bouncer. Now she could see him perfectly. He was a dark skinned man with a very short cut of hair on the very top of his head. Thick leg and arm muscles bunched under black leather. Black shades covered his eyes and a crudely curved knife was in his right hand. In all he was a very dainty figure.
