Summer has come, and after minutes of begging and pleading from Orianna and Kalani, Wren holds lessons outside. Kalani is now lying on her back, asleep in the green grass. Orianna plays with a piece of grass, vaguely listening. Only Aceline sits attentive, taking in everything.
"And that is why after queen Elsabet, all oracle queens must drown," Wren says, finishing her lesson. Queen Elsabet is a touchy subject, though she ruled 5 generations ago. Wren is glad Orianna is not really listening.
"What shall we learn about next?" Wren asks.
"Queen Annelise!" Aceline says. She always answers this question with the name of one poisoner queen or another.
"Very well. Queen Annelise was the first poisoner queen crowned in many generations, she came the generation after Elsabet. Do you know her song?" Wren asks. Aceline shakes her head, and Wren sings the song.
"She killed her sisters in their sleep,
With oleander and castor bean,
Like a true poisoner queen,
The cunning Annelise.
She brought us trade,
With the mainland,
And finished the Volroy grand,
The smart Annelise.
She ruled for 19 years,
Her wonders brought joyous tears,
But with the triplets her time was done,
The great Queen Annelise."
"But Wren, I thought queen Elsabet finished the Volroy," Aceline said.
"She finished most of it, but Queen Annelise finished the last details," Wren replies. Kalani stirs, rubbing her eyes.
"We will all see the Volroy when we are older! Promise you will takes us there Wren? Please?" Kalani exclaims.
"Yes, my queens, you will see the Volroy, one day," Wren says, her eyes glistening.
