Through the crest of wave and the babbling of the breeze, over the gold of the east and the purple of the setting sun, the peaks of the beautiful, impressive and proud mountains, and the grasslands drenched with light was the most beautiful thing anyone could wish to have. A beautiful family bound by destiny.
“When you find a place where your heart belongs, you’ll never leave.” – Kelly S.
She was standing in front of the picture, with her fingers caressing it. It showed a man with cobalt-blue sparkling eyes, golden-streaked hair, and a wide smile. There was also a woman beside him, with long rich light-brown hair, hazel eyes, and a wide smile too. In between them was a little baby who was awake. The man and the woman were both sitting down, the man with his right leg outstretched and the left drawn upward. The woman sat with her left leg outstretched and her right crossed on top of the left leg. She was half-resting on the man and the baby was in a bed in between them with her bright hazel eyes wide open.
These were her biological parents in the picture. She was now sixteen. She was a carbon-copy of her mum who was in the picture. She was now dressed in a long blue gown with several silver studs at the waist line. She was also wearing a pair of 4-inch heeled silver shoe. Her hair was left to fall gracefully at her back as she was dressed for the prom day at school.
Then, she heard light footsteps. Her door opened and closed, and then, a hand came to rest on her shoulder, just as a smile curved on her face. She knew who it was.
“It’s okay, Liana. Your friends are waiting downstairs,” the motherly voice which was filled with love and care said.
She turned to face her mum and her smile brightened. Her mother smiled back. Then, she walked to the mirror and looked at herself for the last time. After that, she turned to face her mother again.
“You’ve chosen the right dress for me, mum,” she said as she hugged her mum. “I look so pretty in this dress.”
“Of course, you do. You’ll always remain beautiful… ”
“… as long as I have a beautiful heart and beautiful dreams,” she completed and smiled. “Thanks, mum,” she added and planted a kiss on her mum’s cheek.
They both walked out of the room with her mum glancing back at the picture before closing the door. It was the original. The one she had painted was in her daughter’s reading room together with others she had painted.
Liana met her friends in the sitting room, talking with her dad. She greeted all of them and they all made to go outside. She also kissed her dad on his cheek and said, “Bye, dad. Bye, mum.”
“Bye,” they both answered.
Liana went to the door and was about closing it when she paused and poked her head back inside.
“Are Kevin and Kim not really going for the prom?” she asked, referring to her siblings.
“No,” her mum replied.
“Are they up in their room?”
Her mum nodded.
Liana looked outside at her friends and said, “Sorry, just give me a minute I’ll be right back.”
She went upstairs and consoled Kevin and Kim, telling them she’ll bring something special each for them. They said their byes and she went downstairs. She waved her parents and went out to join her three friends – Kelly Arnold, Chloe Wayne, and Clara Brown.
She couldn’t wait to reach her school. And she was more than happy because she now knew who she was. She had been told her story last night when she had clocked sixteen. Her name was Lilliana Flander-Jones. Her biological parents, Ryan and Rosella Flander-Jones were her greatest heroes. She knew they were not dead as they would forever live in her heart.
They got into the car and Kelly drove off. She was Lorna’s daughter. Liana was just older to her with three months. Liana was sitting at the passenger’s seat, while Clara and Chloe were at the back seats. Liana looked outside the window and thought of her parents now – Kyle and Olivia Flander-Bennett – who had been taking very good care of her. At first, she had not believed it when they said they were not her biological parents. Although, she argued with them and they punished her for several things she did wrong, she knew they loved her like real parents supposed to.
She also thought of her siblings – Kevin and Kim. They were lovable and also troublesome at times. She had quickly called her best friend, Kelly, on her phone and told her about the news last night. They decided to keep it a secret.
She turned to Kelly who smiled at her. She returned it as Kelly held her hand just to remind her that she was always there. They both caressed their necklaces their mothers had given them on their birthday, as a sign of their friendship.
“Best friends, today, tomorrow, and always,” they both whispered.
Liana turned back to the window and smiled at the remembrance of her biological parents. She remembered how they died with their hands joined to her.
