"What's up?" Matthew walked to a quiet place to call her.
"Matthew, Valentina left her phone and went to the mountain for some hiking." Stephanie's voice sounded worried.
"...And? Is something wrong?"Matthew was overcome with a sense that something was indeed wrong.
"It's been seven hours... And she hasn't returned."
"WHAT?!" Matthew yelled. "Send me the mountain location. I'm going to look for her."
Back at the house, Stephanie sent Matt the location and hung up.
She looked over at everyone.
"All set?"
Nikki nodded. "The games, food, and Val's belongings."
Valentina nodded devilishly. Matthew would be so surprised.
Matthew reached the mountain as quickly as he could.
"VALEN-" His eyes caught something. Something shiny.
He reached over and grabbed it off the ground. It was Valentina's necklace.
"Oh no..." He looked up.
The only way she could've gotten lost is up there...
He swore. This was by far the worst birthday he had.
He reached the top and was shocked when he had to cross animal poop to reach the other side. He was near the top, but on this semi narrow pathway, the only way to go was through this.
He took a deep breath.
He quickly ran across it all and ended up on the other side.
He didn't want to look at the bottom of his shoe, because Valentina was more important.
He continued on.
He reached another stop in just ten minutes.
"WHAT????!!!" In front of him lay another obstacle.
Thorny rose bushes lay on the whole path in front of him. The only way...would be to cross it.
"WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS??!!!"
After multiple attempts, he got across with minor scratches and a little blood on his hands.
He finally got to the top and smiled at himself.
"I did it!!!I got up!!"He cheered.
Valentina smiled. "Good for you!!"
He turned around, shocked.
"V-Valentina? Why didn't you go home? You look fine so...why?"
She chuckled and the gang appeared behind her.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!"They all shouted.
He stuttered. "W-What...How did you g-guys...?"
Nikki wagged a finger at him.
"We went behind the mountain. If you haven't noticed, there's a back staircase behind the mountain. This mountain is for tourists."
"Wait...Animal poop... Roses...."
"Wait. How did you get to the conclusion it's animal poop? It's-"Leon started.
Matthew screamed. "DON'T TELL ME IT'S HUMAN POOP?!"
They all looked at each other.
"BWA HA HA HA HA!!!"
Nikki's smile was wide. "Didnt it look like real poop though? It's actually bird feed with lots of seeds covering it. We got it from the park rangers near our house. They said lots of birds love it."
Matthew was shocked....
"Then the rose bushes...?"
"Oh those are real. Good job."
"WHAT?! I SWEAR!!!"
Valentina lay a hand on his shoulder.
"At least we have barbecue for your hard work. We also have wine."
"Wait...no....are those the only obstacles you put out?"
Valentina nodded. "Yeah, why?"
His eyes got wide. He got chased by animals, had to cross over lots of wasp nests, and even had to climb up because there wasn't any places he could hike up from.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" Matthew screamed.
