Then, I heard a voice, abruptly, in the darkness of fear. The voice was distant and echoed slightly, and, although I knew I wasn't speaking, I knew it was my voice.
"D-Don't hurt me," The voice, my voice, trembled. It was a memory, nay, a distant nightmare, I realized.
"I won't hurt you, little one," A smooth, dark voice, like black silk, said.
"Run, Zephyra, I'll-" A flash of red eyes, a tall, dark shadow with an even darker smile, and... I was back to reality.
My blood ran down the boy's chin, and his eyes still pulsed red, as though he were in a trance.
"Not again," I began to tremble, with rage rather than fear.
"What?" The boy's eyes faded slowly back to blue, though he still drank my blood. The light caused my glasses to reflect an opaque silver. Another image flashed before my eyes: A boy with two puncture marks in his neck, his face shadowed and indiscernable, stone cold, lifeless.
"Never again," I said as I uppercut the boy's-the vampire's- jaw with such force that it caused him to detach from my wrist. I then spun and kicked him in the stomach, kicked his feet out from under him, and then stomped on his hand for good measure. Now it seemed I was the one in a trance, my eyes seemingly soulless and heartless. I began to turn my back on him, picking up my bag and preparin to walk away when I felt ice creeping up my ankle. I turned back to see the vampire standing, his hand emitting a pale, bluish-white fog. Before I had time to ract, he came towards me like a flash of lightning, grabbing my throat.
"Honestly," He tightened his grip on my throat, "You're worse than those Guardians. I think I'll-" He didn't have a chance to finish as a shadowy blur divebombed him and began tearing at his face with long, deadly, sharp claws.
"Aldrich?" I choked as my raven hissed and cawed and savagely attacked the vampire, my vision beginning to darken. The boy released my throat in order to fend off the seemingly rabid and derranged Aldrich, who divebombed him again and again, a murderous look in his intelligent eyes. "Don't," I pleaded weakly, though who I said it to, I didn't know. Everything seemed to be in slow motion, as Aldrich made a fateful dive towards the vampire, claws outstretched. The boy swung his fist at Aldrich's approaching form and connected, a sickening crack ringing audibly throughout the forest. Aldrich rammed into a tree, and fell, slowly, like a leaf falling in Autumn, to the cold, hard ground.
"No!" I screamed, and everything sped back up around me, the ice around my ankle splintering into a million, tiny, mirror-like shards. Both boy's flinched, staring at me incredulously, the blond one looking at me surprised and terrified, backing away a bit. I began to limp over to Aldrich's still figure.
"Aldrich?" I whispered, tears beading down my face.
"Zeph-y-ra," Aldrich croaked in a bird-like tone, and then was still. I buried my face in his soft feathers that were quickly beginning to grow cold. For a whole minute, I sobbed, and then I spent a whole other minute burying him. When I stood, one of the only pieces of my past was buried in the earth, the only thing to commemorate his grave a flat stone.
"You killed him," I said, my voice as frigid and dangerous as a winter storm.
"It-He-Attacked me," The boy stuttered from behind me.
"And you deserved it," I turned slowly, my hair covering my eyes. I began to limp away, stopping a few feet away from the stunned boys.
