Chapter 3- Dinner: More Questions than Answers

I started awake from a loud, impatient knock on my door. Yawning lightly, and glancing out my window, I saw it was dusk. I slipped on my shoes as the knock sounded again, this time more insistant.

"Hold your horses," I folded my arms, annoyed, as the knock resounded again. With an indignant glare, I yanked the door open to find Zero standing there, posed as if he were just about to knock again. Thumbing my nose, I said, "You do know that knocking repeatedly is only incentive for irritation, not for picking up the pace?" Zero began to stalk off, waving his hand for me to follow. Snorting, I jogged to catch up with him, scanning his face to see if he disliked me or was just grouchy. Maybe it was both, or maybe he hated everybody, or...

"Hey, Four-eyes, you do know its rude to stare?" I irritatedly pursed my lip, adjusted my glasses, and then laughed, causing Zero to flinch.

"Four-eyes?" I laughed, "What are you, a fifth grader? Couldn't you think of a better insult?" Rolling my eyes, I lightly punched his elbow, since I was too short to punch his shoulder. Though, it was true that I'd put on my glasses before exiting my room, which had retangular, dark, nearly black, green rims. Zero, despite my attempts to spark a conversation, seemed to radiate a dark aura of gloominess and silence. Eventually, I gave up and was content to just grin from ear to ear, hands folded behind my head as I walked.

After a while, we ended up in a small, quaint dining room/ kitchen combo. The Chairman, who was tending a large, cast iron pot of soup, turned as I walked in. I suppressed a laugh when I saw his ridiculously bright pink apron.

"Ah, Zephyra, sit down, dinner will be ready in a moment." He grinned and gestured with his spatula towards the table.

"Okay," I smiled, face twitching from resisting the urge to laugh.

"Sit next to me, Zephyra," Yuki pat the seat next to her. I rolled my eyes and complied, though, there wasn't exactly a choice, seeing as there  were only four seats. Yuki sat at one end of the table, with Zero and I sitting on either side of her, and there was a seat for the Chairman at the other end of the table.

"So, how's Freddy?" The Chairman asked as he set a large pot down and opened it with a flourish. I looked at him blankly for a moment, confused, and then it clicked.

"Oh, you mean Uncle Frederick!" I slapped my forehead, "He's good, albeit a bit quirky." I smiled at the image of Uncle Frederick, with his army cut, silvery hair, cheerful, stark blue eyes, and perpetually smiling face, as though he were thinking up a good joke.

"Your Uncle is Frederick Rowen?" Zero asked, shaking his head incredulously.

"Frederick Rowen?" Yuki asked a few moments after Zero, confused.

"He's a famous vampire hunter," Chairman Cross explained as he dished up dinner. Dinner consisted of a soup with a creamy white broth and chunks of carrots, squash, zucchini, broccoli, and fish; a small plate of fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries; and an ornate teapot with what smelled like mint tea. I popped a blueberry in my mouth, enjoying the slightly unripe, tart flavor hinted with sweetness, and then looked directly at the Chairman.

"So what are the Moon Dorms?" I impatiently tapped my forefinger against my bowl as the Chairman took a big bite of soup. He exhaled, a blissful expression on his face, and then spoke in a  nervous, ridiculous tone, like he were hiding something.

"You see," Chairman Cross twiddled his thumbs, "There's the Day Class, which is during the day, and the Night Class, which is selfexplanatory. The Moon Dorms are simply the Night Class Dorms. Nothing more." I narrowed my eyes.

"What are you hiding, Chairman? I can easily tell when someone is lying to me, and you are doing so now." I bradished my spoon at him.

"Nothing, nothing," He shook his head rapidly, "Nothing at all!" My brow furrowed, I knew he was lying.

"Okay," I ate my soup, eyes narrowed suspiciously at the Chairman, staring lasers into his unseen eyes. However, despite my wordless and 'subtle' attempts to get him to tell me, all was for not. I stopped at the door, half bowing politely. "Thank you for the meal," I said, then I folded my arms. "And I will find out eventually whatever it is you're keeping from me. I have a tendency to do so."

"Really, Zephyra," The Chairman nervously, jokingly scolded, "Curiosity killed the cat." Shrugging, I walked out the door and went to my room. Once there, I changed into my pajamas, set my alarm, and went to bed with more questions then answers.

Zero and Yuki looked at the Chairman suspiciously as soon as the door was closed.

"What?!" The Chairman looked slightly frazzled.

"If Zephyra already knows about vampires, than why not just tell her?" Zero asked, picking at his food. Immediately, the Chairman's face hardened, and he took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"It is very possible that Zephyra hates vampires more than even you, Zero." Yuki's eyes widened and her mouth opened and closed like a fish. Zero just stared at his food like it was some alien substance.

"But-how-why?" Yuki asked, quietly, astonished. The Chairman simply looked at each Guardian in turn, dead in the eye, a serious look on his face.

"Keep an eye on her," The Chairman put his glasses back on, "And do not let her learn of the Night Class."
