CHAPTER TWO
Kitty stands a few places in front of me in the line we all formed to walk out of the room. She walks like a zombie, not exactly aware of where she is going but headed that way anyway. Soon it is her turn to hand off her envelope. She does it without hesitation. Then, as she passes through the door, she acts normal again. Laughing, jumping around on her feet like a fairy.
When it is my turn to hand Mrs. Potter my envelope, I give it to her but watch it, like it is something scary about to pounce on me if I turn my back on it. India slightly pushes me forward as she hands off her envelope. The two of us walk down the dark windowed hallways with lots of people surrounding us. People file out of classrooms much like we all did. In one of the classrooms, I see the boy from Graceland Division hand off his envelope with ease. A smile shines on his face; he is without a doubt happy and going to stay in his division. I envy him, his serenity. He notices me watching him and waves at me. I look away.
Everyone walks to the same place, ready to leave and never have to come back. The Loading Room has all of the buses that takes everyone home. It is a big, open room with tall walls. Everything has an echo in here, and it is extremely loud with the buses making noise and people talking. Depending on where you live, you are assigned a certain bus to travel on. States Division is closest to Colombian Division and Papillon Division, and there are three buses assigned for all occupants from them to use. It doesn't matter which one we get on, just as long as it is one of the three we are appointed to.
India leads the way onto one of the buses and I follow her idly. I have been stuck on the thought of my test and the envelope. How could my division be States Division? But then again, how could I be thinking these thoughts? I love my family, and I don't know how I could chose a different one. I would have to be away from my family. I couldn't do that.
But I don't belong in that division. So what was I expecting to get as a result? Maybe I just need to learn how to be happy in my division. I am almost certain India will be staying in States Division. She is uncomfortable with the same things I am uncomfortable with, so maybe I just need to do what she does.
A guy from States Division sits next to my sister. He has been asking her out for quite a long time now, and she refuses. Can he not take a hint? I watch as his head keeps bobbing as he speaks to Kitty. She stays still, poised, as she talks back to him.
Some occupants from Pappilon Division step onto the bus and they hesitate. They are outnumbered by a lot on this bus. Since they have already stepped on the bus, it would be hard for them to step out now that they have been seen. Occupants from Colombian and States are already speaking to them.
"Hey Hippie." A States guy says to the one in front. They begin to file onto the bus, searching for seats.
"You can sit on my lap, beatnik." A guy says to a girl. She ignores him and follows the guy in front of her. The thing is, I think as they pass me and I notice they hold hands, she may have to sit on the guy she follows. We have scattered to where there are two to a seat, not giving these occupants room to sit together. But really, they don't mind having to sit on each other. Its weird, but still- they are the free spirited type. Not all of them are like that, some just love the nature, but the majority love to be with others and have a good time.
"Freak." The boy sitting next to Kitty says, his foot in the aisle. The Papillon occupant trips on his foot, slamming his face into the bottom of the bus.
"Hey, stop it!" Kitty yells. She tries to get up, tries to look over and reach out to the boy who fell. But the boy beside her, Rick, stays in her way. He puts his hands on her writsts to make her stop moving.
