Wow, thank you so much for over 200 reads!

This chapter and the one after next (after the smutty chapter, heh) will be a bit angsty.

And I start school next week, so updates for this story may take a little longer than normal. My apologies.

Hope you enjoy this chapter!

John had reluctantly been spending more time with Mary the past week, she had seemed rather pushy about getting along. John thought, perhaps she'd felt their marriage dying, and wanted to rekindle it.

In a way, that was true. Deep down in Mary's blackened heart, she cared for John. But the real reason for her clinging to John so recently was because her affair ended. Sholto had seen how wrong his actions were, and called it off. Mary felt so empty, so heartbroken, she needed someone to hold her. And the only one she had anymore was her husband John.

They sat quietly on their worn couch, snuggled close and watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. John thought of Sherlock, how he loved Star Trek. How cute it was that he always did the Vulcan salute, 'Live Long and Prosper.' He sighed, thinking of the boy he'd come to love.

Star-crossed would be his only description of his and his student's relationship, of their love, more or less. Two who loved each other immensely, thwarted by bad luck. Why it had to be that way, John had no clue, and he hated it.

Mary sniffed, a dead giveaway.

"What's wrong?" John suddenly became alarmed, lifting her head from his chest to look at her tear stained face.

She bit her bottom lip, wondering what to say.

My lover broke it off, now I'm stuck with you

No. She couldn't say that. Her only source of comfort would run away in a furious, heartbroken heap if she let those hurtful words escape her swollen throat.

"I just..."

Want to be with him

"Feel so bad," she cried, black streaks of mascara running down her pink cheeks. "I don't want what we had to die,"

"Oh, Mary," John pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly. "It's not dead, not going to die,"

She let out a gross sob, what John thought was a happy-reassured plea. No. Oh no, she cried even harder in that moment, because she wanted it to end. She didn't want their marriage to live on.

John ran his fingers through her hair, hushing her like any good husband would. He was lucky that Mary was sobbing too loudly to hear the buzzing of his cell phone. John glanced at the caller ID: Sherlock Holmes. His eyes shut, quilt and sadness washed over him. And then he pressed reject.

Sherlock hadn't spoken a word to John during his regular sixth period class, and with no more "study periods" after class, John was wondering if his student would just walk out. Like nothing was going on.

But he had to keep reminding himself, nothing should be going on.

"Class dismissed," he said to his class, their blank expressions disappearing as they stood to leave.
