SPONGEBOB knew that he should have moved the shell the night gary died. over time, the cracks had built up and the discolouration only got stronger. maybe the shell had lost its original meaning, to remember his faithful snail. and maybe that meaning had been replaced with a constant reminder that life wasn't neverending, like he seemed to believe in his childish state. but who cared? in the end, it was just a shell. hell, he was a sentient sponge, he didn't know if he was immortal or would die tomorrow.

changes rarely occurred in spongebob's life, he still walked to work, eventually giving up on his unreachable goal of earning a drivers license. he still worked for the cash grabbing mr krabs, who had seemed to weaken and dull over the years. he still saw squidward every day, although their relationship was far more neuteral now, spongebob's once childlike mindset now a distant memory to everyone. the krusty krab's days of high buisness had long gone. though their secret formulae was never exposed, the chum bucket grew, monopolised the market. left the krusty krab looking so measley and small that only the regulars seemed to remember its existence.

spongebob didn't care. he could deal with most changes. like the change of not having gary around, or the change in his relationships. but the one change he coould never deal with, was the change that came once patrick left.
