A young boy sat in the back of the class, gazing out of the window. He drifted off into his thoughts, but came back to reality when he heard a large smack. He looked up, eyes widened.
His teacher sighed. "Adam! You have got to start paying more attention!"
The young brunette, Adam, nodded. He spoke in a silent tone. "Yes, ma'am."
The bell rang and Adam stood from his seat, collecting his books. He headed out the door but stopped when hearing his name being called. He turned around to face his teacher, "Yes, Ms. Blevins?"
His teacher sighed and looked down at her student. "Adam, you've been getting behind in your school work, is everything fine at home? If something is wrong, you can just tell me."
Adam formed a small smile on his face. "Everything's fine."
He then made his way out of the class and down the hall. Ms. Blevins watched him as he left, then went back to grading her students papers.
Adam dragged his feet against the sidewalk on his way home. He reached his house at the end of the street and opened the door.
He dropped his bag on the floor and walked into his bedroom. Another day went by and Adam still hadn't been improving is his school work. He had been doing fine until just a couple of weeks ago.
He changed out of his school clothes and opened the door to his room and made his way to the front door. "I'll be back soon, Yale!"
Adam exited his home and went over to the pond. He liked to go feed the fish and just liked being there. His parents had recently died and he has been living with his grandfather. He had been feeling lonely, even though he rarely was.
The kids in his class never treated him badly and people were always nice to him, but things just weren't the same.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard a large crash. Adam quickly stood up an looked around. "Hello?"
A man in rugged clothing came walking- no, limping, up to him. He had a gunshot in his leg and looked up at Adam. "Help."
--
Adam stood there for a second before going up to the man. He helped the man walk to his house an brought him inside. His uncle stood in front of them. "What happened?"
He quickly closed the door behind them and helped take the man to a seat. He sat across from the man and and listened to his story.
The man spoke in a raspy voice. "I-I ran away- the war has gotten worse."
His uncle sighed. "Adam, go to your room please, this is for grown ups."
Adam exited the room, but stayed in the hall. He tried to listen but couldn't quite understand what they were saying. Grown ups were always talking about the war and he was always curious, but they never let him hear.
About an hour had past, and Adam had stayed in the hall. He was sound asleep. Yale opened the door and saw his nephew was on the floor. He picked Adam up and carried him up to his room.
