Valerie's POV

We are allowed to leave the school grounds on the weekend but we are definitely not allowed to be leaving with a boy. Not that I would even count Gary as a boy, more of a extra terrestrial.

We snuck out like ninjas, well, I did anyway. Gary kept tripping over crap and Cal was puffing from lack of breath.

"California, would you shut up?" I demanded as I flicked my head backwards to face her. "We are trying to be stealthy here." I only received a grunt in return and the sound of her breathing didn't quiet down at all, in fact I actually think it got louder.

As soon as we reached the front gates, we made a run for it. Sprinted past the end of the school grounds and to the nearest bus stop just around the corner. We all arrived breathless and we didn't even have to fill our lungs with oxygen before the bus turned up.

We marched onto the crowded bus and were forced to stand. As I was first to get on the bus I had to stand next to a man who was holding the bar up above us, my face almost in his armpit. I scrunched my face in disgust and tried to think happy thoughts. Only two stops to go.

It was only ten minutes into town but they seem to drag on forever. I stumbled off the past and faked gagging, sticking my finger in my mouth in an attempt to make Cal and Gary laugh, didn't work. They weren't even looking at me.

"Hey, there he is." I looked up to see Gary pointing into the distance, I followed the line of his finger and gulped. Flynn.

Cal must have seen my expression because she started laughing.

"I though we could use some help from an actual male in this situation so I got Gary to text him." I widened my eyes and sulkily followed along behind them. I had already embarrassed myself in front of him enough day and it was enviable that I was going to do it again. Friends are cruel, really cruel.

We reached Flynn and we all walked down the street in my big line.

"What sounds better?" Flynn started, "Hair cut to match clothes or clothes to match a hair cut?" He finished.

"Umm-" Cal tried but I interjected almost immediately.

"Hair cut first definitely."

"Alright then." Flynn lead the way across the street to the nearest hairdressers.

We waited on the couch for a while before Gary's name was called. He stood up and Cal shot up with him.

"I'll go with him." She stated. "You guys stay here."

"So what would be dress him as... Gangster?" Flynn turned to me and asked. I shook my head.

"Not really his thing." We both turned to look at Gary who was sitting in the chair, wriggling and laughing because hair that was falling onto his neck.

"Nerd?" Flynn tried again.

"Isn't that what we are trying to steer him away from?" I asked.

"Right, hippy?" I gave a little laugh, it was clear to see that Flynn was trying to make me feel comfortable and it was nice to know that he was making an effort.

"No hippy." I shook my head.

"Classy? Casual? Jock? Douche? Druggy? Princess? Fai-"

"Princess, definitely princess!" I cut him off. He gave me a warm smile and bit his lip before smoothly transitioning onto another topic of discussion.

Flynn and I talked non stop while we waited for Gary to finish. When we finally did it was actually quite shocking. He was actually starting to look a little bit more like a human.

There was no more bowl cut hair style that his mum had decided for him but now his hair was cut short, maybe three or four centimetres off his head and the hairdresser had used a gel to spike it up. And can I just mention that the gel smelt like mangos, mmmm.

"Dayum Gary," I said and attempted to wink. "Looking fine." He stuck out his tongue at me though I knew he appreciated the compliment.

"Clothes time!" Flynn said, nearly squealing. Maybe he was gay, now that would be awkward. Gary paid for the cut and bought a tin of the gel.

The boys walked ahead and I pulled Cal's arm so I could talk to her.

"Do you reckon Flynn's gay?" Cal snorted at my question. "What? I'm serious!" I slapped her arm causing her to wince.

"No, I do not." Cal stated and slapped me back. "It hurts doesn't it, B."

"No, Cal, I think the word you are looking for is bitch. B-I-T-C-H. Bitch. It's easy to say, really." She rolled her eyes and went on with the conversation.

"Why do you ask anyway?"

"Because he practically squealed when he said that we were going clothes shopping and no straight male does that willingly." I stated, happy with my argument. It made sense.

"He rolled his eyes, even I saw that. Like it was all whites there, no green at all." Cal said. "For someone who likes him you really don't look at him that much."

I raised my eyebrows as if it was obvious why I didn't look at him. "What if he caught me staring?"

"Really, Val, that's why you doing look? I'll look for you, okay?" Cal tilted her head and put a dreaming look in her eye just to annoy me.

"Don't you dare." I growled but we both laughed and rushed to catch up with the boys who had stopped in front of a store.

"Were going in here." Gary stated.

"They've got everything." Flynn finished for him.

"Okay." Cal and I said in synchronisation and we followed the boys in.

"Wait there, Gary, we will pick out your clothes." I nodded to Gary as he sat down and then turned to see that California was already marching away with a purpose. "You're helping too." I took ahold of Flynn's arm and dragged him along behind me. But let's get real here, we all know I just wanted to touch his bicep.
