Valerie's POV

Auditions are the third best time of year, obviously losing to the actual rehearsals and the performance of the production.

"Hey, Val. Are you auditioning for the production this year?" Kay, a grade four, asked me. I had met her last year during production, she played my little sister.

"Yeah, of course." I replied. "How about you?"

"Yeah, I loved it so much last year. And I love Grease! It'll be amazing this year." Kay stated before quickly waving goodbye and then racing off to rejoin her friends.

I made my way to the back the auditorium and joined the queue of eager students waiting to audition as well. Every year I have auditioned and every year I have gotten a major role. The first year I was in grade six and I only auditioned because I thought it would be a good way to spend more time in a room with Flynn, and mind you, it was, but since then I have grown a liking to the performing arts.

The line was so long that I was in line with one of the windows in the auditoriums entryway. Flynn waved to me from that window with a gorgeous wide smile on his face. I smiled back happily, momentarily forgetting about the line that extended out of sight.

By the time I got into the auditorium my feet hurt but I had been pumping myself up for so long about the audition nothing could stop me now.

"Valerie Marshall," A voice called from the table ahead of me and I walked onto the stage. I almost felt like curtsying. "It's good to see you back." I smiled politely and waited further instructions. "I have no doubt that you have already memorised the script," I nodded and Mr. Simpson, the head of the school's arts department, gestured dramatically with his hands for me to proceed.

I said the passage with as much emotion as I could possibly bring out of me. I put my heart into every word I said and by the end I was exhausted but happy with the result.

"Perfect, as always." Mr. Simpson stated and scribbled a note onto the sheet of paper in front of him. "Now, you sing." Mr Simpson said and ended his sentence with a snippet of an opera song, showing off his vocals.

I sang a song that my mother used to sing me before I would go to sleep, Forever Young by Rod Stewart.

I smiled and jumped down from the stage. I jogged up the stairs of the auditorium and made my way to the foyer.

The room was crowded with students awaiting the announce of what part they got, if they even got any. I pushed through the groups of people and made my way to Flynn who was waving to me from the other side of the room.

"Now, we wait." I said to Flynn and Gary as I reached then and they both nodded in agreement. "How do you think you went?" I asked them.

Gary answered first, "Alright. I didn't put everything into it but I'm sure I did enough."

"I tried my hardest but I don't know what that looks like to them." Flynn said.

"Well then you'll definitely get a part, if you tried your hardest." I stated and smiled at him.

"How did you go?" Gary said and I had to pry my eyes away from Flynn so that I could look at him to answer.

"Yeah, I felt pretty good. Well, I just hope Mr. Simpson liked it."

"I know he did." Flynn stated confidently and I looked at him with a confused expression. "I heard him say 'perfect, as always' when you finished. I was watching from the doorway." Flynn smiled and a swarm of butterflies magically appeared in my stomach.

After what seemed like hours of getting more and more cramped by the second and bucket loads nervous waiting we were all finally told that all auditions had been completed and we were all told to re-enter the auditorium. It was a slow process as one by one we exited through the narrow doorway and eventually we all were back in the auditorium spread among the seats.

"Now, we announce the parts." Mr. Simpson stated. A murmur of excited whispers mixed with complaints of annoyance about how long it has taken but everyone knows that Mr. Simpson likes to keep you in suspense. "Main parts first," He said and a drumroll sounded from the dark stage. "Danny... Flynn West!" Mr. Simpson clapped his hands, Gary slapped Flynn on the back and I gave him a quick congratulatory hug.

"Well done." I whispered in Flynn's ear and he smiled in content.

"And Sandy... Valerie Marshall!" I gasped in surprise at Mr. Simpson's announcement. I'll be co-staring with Flynn, singing with him, dancing with him, kissing him (wouldn't be the first time).

"Congratulations." Flynn whispered in my ear and with that he left a light peck lingering on my cheek.

"Congratulations you two!" Mr. Simpson shouted loudly into the microphone causing a deafening screech to ring through the auditorium. "Now for the other roles... Kinickie... Gary Vance!"

"Good job, Gaz." Flynn said as he slapped Gary on the back.

"Congrats, Gary." I smiled at him.

"And, Rizzo... Our newcomer California Walton! Congratulations!"

I was stunned, Cal didn't tell me she was auditioning. Didn't best friends tell each other everything? I had told her this morning before I left to go but she had never said anything. I sat still and silent with my mouth hanging slightly open and my eyes wide. All I could think was 'wow'.
