The sun was rising on the horizon.
He saw the sky grow dark with anger and the air come alive with the scent of a fast approaching storm.
He yawned and rolled over, crushing the blanket he'd thrown off at some point in the night.
He nodded and lowered his gaze in shame.
She blinked back tears at the sight of him.
The words came more easily, now that she was in her element, with what she knew and was most comfortable with.
She wasn't going to grace him with a farewell show with that kind of disrespect.
He was the sort of girl who could fight a girl at full strength and still come out all beaten up.
She just shook her head; he was a hopeless case.
He peeked around the tree that hid him from view.
He had all the cards in his hand; he could crush them whenever he chose... but something was holding him back.
He remembered that voice: the sweet lullabies gently coaxing him to sleep.
For now, they could just look towards that second step.
Another pause, this time a tad more uncomfortable.
The slap sounded unusually loud in the silence that had preceded it.
He knew it was hopeless, but he tried one more time anyway.
She'd tried enough times to break her; she didn't have anything left for one last go.
He tried to settle back down to sleep, but failed.
He awoke to a mouthful of dog hair.
They sat silently after that, enjoying the wind caressing their cheeks and hair and the clouds moving lazing past.
It wasn't fair, but there wasn't a thing he could do about it.
One day thing were going to change.
A half-hearted shrug answered him.
He shook his head, then instantly regretted it as the room blurred.
Left to their own devices, the group of friends looked around.
The pair of them looked utterly adorable, almost picturesque.
She hesitated, hand on the curtain fabric, before swallowing and yanking the curtains shut.
He looked so small, so fragile, lying there with pale skin wrapped in scars and cheeks still moist with tears.
