Sebastian had been gone for months. For you it felt like years, having go on with life without him you could barely remember what it felt like to be in love him as deeply has you once had.
At the time when he left, you were both enamoured with each other. You had spent every waking moment together, but he wanted you to give up everything and follow him across the country on tour like a groupie. Your career was taking off, and you couldn't give that up for some man, no matter how much said he loved you.
It was hard without him at first. He would call late at night and whisper sweet nothings through the phone, hushed 'i love yous' before he was due to go on stage. You would lie in bed at night and forget he wasn't sleeping next to you. But then the phone calls became few and far between, and then he seemed to forget to call altogether. Somewhere along the way, you realised you weren't missing him anymore. Your life was going fine without him, in fact it seemed to be getting better. Promotions at work, a new circle of friends, stability. Something Sebastian could never provide with his rockstar lifestyle.
Then one night, out of the blue, he came back.
"Babe!" he called out to the dark apartment. You came rushing out from the bedroom in your pyjamas, having been fast asleep. You realised it was Sebastian quickly, it was hard to mistake his long blonde hair for anyone else. You completely forgot he even had a key to the place.
"Sebastian? What are you doing here?" You said groggily, rubbing your eyes. You were overtired, and he had scared the absolute shit out of you bursting into the apartment like he had.
"I'm back from the tour! I missed you!" Sebastian said, as if he had been gone for the weekend and not on a nationwide tour.
Sebastian's tall frame started to move towards you for a hug and you took a step back without thinking. He frowned.
"What's wrong?"
You sighed. He had always been so naive, but you never expected him to be this naive.
"Bas, it's been almost a year, do you really think you could walk back in here and pretend we're still the same happy couple?"
Sebastian blinked, for he had no answer to that question. You waited for a response and sighed again when it seemed he wouldn't be offering one. Sebastian threw his hands up in the air with frustration.
"So what, this it it? We're breaking up?"
"What do you mean? This is it? You've been gone ages!" You said, trying to keep your voice down for the neighbours.
"But I still love you!" Sebastian cried. Your eyes fell to the floor.
"Sebastian, I don't love you anymore,"
Sebastian paused, taken aback by your words. "Why not?"
"Don't be stupid, Bas. We're not the same as we were when you left, and don't act so innocent. Don't act like you haven't been fucking around on tour,"
Sebastian remained silent again. That was enough of an answer for you.
"I think you should leave,"
Sebastian walked towards you, the space between you closing until you were almost touching. He kissed the top of your head, like he used to always do when you had fights. But this time, he knew it would be last one he would give you.
"I'm sorry you feel this way,"
"Goodbye, Sebastian,"
He started walking out of the apartment, making his way down the hall slowly, like he was wading in quicksand. Sebastian hoped you would suddenly change your mind and call out his name. That you would come running toward him and leap into his arms. Instead you watched him leave, and closed the door behind him. He had left the key in lock, so you collected it and placed it on the bench before heading back to bed, your mind clear of thoughts of the man you had once loved.
