The Grace Field House a quaint house filled with children and one adult. Though we had no relations, she is our mother, and we, the children, spend time with each other, are not siblings.

I am an orphan... or so I thought.

"Lily... pe...ec... s...re..." a distant voice said.

Contented. Ecstatic. Satisfied. Jubilant. ... I smiled.

Envy. Anger. Resentment. Annoyance.

Black. Danger.

Aching. Soreness. Throbbing. Agony.

A normal day with happiness and laughter... Those distant days were like a dream- The end of a dream, the start of a morning...

At 5:30 I wake up and help Mother make breakfast. At 6 the others start to wake up. Looking at the 39 children inside this house, with varying personalities, age, and ethnicity, we were not blood-related.

Fixing the tables I saw Ray and Norman come in and help. Along with me and Emma, we were the four eldest children in the house. The doors opened up and Emma came in with the others.

"Gweod mhworninhg!" Emma said loudly, "Norman! Ray! Lily!"

"Good morning Emma." Norman replied cheerfully.

"'Gweod mhworninhg', Emma" Ray responded.

"Good morning Emma," I sighed, "Please remember it's Lilian."

"Someone's full of energy this morning..." Norman commented, "and you haven't even had breakfast yet."

"What are you five?" Ray teased.

"I'm eleven just like the three of you!! I'm just young at heart!" Emma ranted "How could you be so mean to me, Ray??"

Mother giggled and said, "Emma I could use a hand here..."

"MAMA..." Emma bawled, "I'll do it again like a grown up."

"Why would you?" Mother said, "I love that side of you."

"The five year old side of me?!" Emma whined.

"No, the side of you that's considerate and mindful of everyone in the family." Mother consoled.

"... Thanks!" Emma said happily.

This was my life. Every day its nearly the same occurrences and antics. This entire house... was my family.

We finally finished arranging the tables and sat down to eat.

"Right on time" Mother said as she rang the bell.

 "Let's dig in!" Everyone chorused.

This was my world. 10 years... no one thought to question it. They were the usual, common days. The lavish beds, delicious food, our pure white uniforms, the identification numbers on our necks, and... the litany of daily exams.

'For our future'... 'For our well-being'

Mother said that these tests were to be a substitute for conventional school.

"Age 11. Type *. Please answer every question within 10 seconds." A crackling, robotic voice said from the desk, "We will begin now. Question 1."

The machine beeped as I input my answer. "Question 2." *Beep* "Question 3." *Beep*
