chapter 19

*before the abduction in chapter 18*

Fallon's POV

I was in my room with the door locked.

Mommy and Daddy were fighting again. Mommy and Daddy fought every single day, Jadey told me it was because they'd "fallen out of love". "You can fall in love, Fallon, so of course, you can fall out of love," Jade told me over and over again when she'd held me close when they fought.

I asked Jade why Mommy and Daddy still stayed together even though all they did was fight and make everyone else miserable. "They're together for you dummy, they don't want you to live in a broken family," Jade told me.

I didn't understand what she meant but I nodded my head as if I did. "But to me, broken families that still have love in their divided halves are better than loveless families that constantly fight," Jade told me.

Jade teaches and tells me a lot. She helps me stay alive in this hellhole.

She also taught me to lock the door every night so the sound would be muffled and so Daddy couldn't barge in and attack me.

Daddy used to be better, Jade said, he wasn't so bad until his accident. He was driving Jadey home after Jadey won first prize for her photography. He and Jade were celebrating and singing along to the radio when a drunk driver hit their car. The impact of the crash made daddy lose all control of his legs, so he was semi-paralysed. I don't really understand what that meant but Jade said it meant Daddy could not use his legs and had to use a wheelchair. Daddy blamed Jade and Mommy tried protecting Jade.

That's why they always fight.

I locked the door so I could slip out. I wanted to see Beck so I was clutching a card I'd drawn for him. I'd placed the card inside a grey envelope, to remind Beck who it was from.

On the front of the card, I'd drawn the picture of Jade and Beck at the Hollywood sign. On the inside, I pasted pictures of the three of us from some of the outings we'd been on.

I loved Beck, I didn't want him to be hurt. Jade too. I slipped out of my room and onto the roof as the wind blew my hair onto my face. I clutched my jacket close as I staggered towards the edge of the roof. I tried to steady myself as I approached the treehouse that was perched on the tree beside the roof.

I remembered the day when Beck surprised me with that treehouse for my birthday when I was five.

-Flashback-

My best friend Mason and his mom drove me home that day just like every day. Mason and I just went to the park after school, the same park where Jadey and Beck met.

Mason's mom bought us ice cream and we spent a few hours just laying on the grass and singing songs from his mom's phone. I liked spending time with Mason, but I had to go home.
