The Royal Ball starts.
Earls, Countess', Barons and Viscounts arrive, dressed in their best suits and gowns. It's all a matter of showing-off, proving they're worthy of attending the party. Waiters walk across, offering wine and champaign to the guests.
Classic music plays, feet shuffle and heels click the floor in an almost rythymic sort of way. Chandeliers hang down with lit golden candles.
A fountain stands in the middle, water rising and falling gracefully on its porcelain stairs.
The King walks in, accompanied by his two Queens.
Everyone's attention is on them. On him. Murmurs fill the atmosphere, denying the rumours of the King being ill. There he is, walking with a smile on his face, looking as healthy as ever.
And this fact brings a question. Prince Seokjin's marriage is out of love?
Then heads turn to the said Prince and his wife, watching intently, their eyes scanning them as if hunting a prey. Their arms are linked, and the Prince smiles, whispering something in his wife's ear.
"May I have this dance?" He asks, gently holding her hand and leading her to the dance floor.
Everyone steps aside, and Seokjin and Yisun stand in the middle, facing each other as they take matching slow steps.
"You're a good dancer," He implies, a smile on his face.
"I know," She replies, her eyes held in his in a firm contact.
She takes a turn and stops, and he holds her hand. They move slowly again, and watchers are mesmerized by their chemistry. It was as if they've been practicing the dance for ever, which they haven't.
The song comes to an end, another plays, and people join.
Again, slow matching steps, the Prince and the Princess being the middle of attention. Then they turn, and exchange partners.
Yisun finds herself in front of Earl Park. He smiles and holds her hand, and they move.
"How's your marriage life going?" He asks.
"You're speaking to me as if I were your friend." She raises an eyebrow. "You barely know me."
"I do?"
"You being Seokjin's confidante doesn't make you mine," She retorts.
"He loves you," He says.
"Lies."
"Not."
"That's my husband you're talking about."
"Yes." His smile widens. "And I've been your husband's confidante more than you have ever been." He raises an eyebrow suggestively and twirls her around.
And she's face to face with the second Prince.
She gasps involuntarily, and he smirks.
"Why are you surprised, Princess?" Taehyung asks.
"Just startled, that's all," She mutters under her breath, looking away to avoid eye contact.
She slightly flinches when their hands touch, and he notices, but ignores, and continues swaying with her.
He leans closer, and she shivers.
"The King is dying soon," He whispers in her ear.
"How do you know?" She asks, her voice shaking at their proximity.
He grins. "I know best." He leans back, looking at her face, and that one sentence makes Yisun's heart beat a hundred times faster.
"One last thing," He says, "Take care of your husband."
And she spins around again, this time rather forcefully. She stumbles as she holds herself back from hitting another man's chest.
She looks up, and recognizes the man as the General. She mumbles a small apology, and walks away, out of the ballroom, leaving the said man confused.
She walks down the halls, her steps quick. It's a little long walk to her bedroom, but she makes it anyway, and pushes open the terrace's doors.
She looks out into the Royal Garden, and sees two figures running around, one tall and one short. Yisun unknowingly smiles when she recognizes them, but her smile falls as soon as she does.
She walks out to The Royal Garden, hearing giggles becoming more audible as she approaches.
She sees Duke Jungkook, crouching down. The little Princess, Sohye, is also crouching, facing him, and her eyes are shining with amusement as she stares at something he's holding.
"What are you doing?" Yisun asks, and stops when something flies out of Jungkook's hand, making Sohye stand up, gasping.
She turns to Yisun. "You scared it!"
"I'm sorry, but what do you mean?" Yisun tilts her head.
"You didn't have to be so loud! Aren't youㅡ"
"Sohye," Jungkook cuts her off, then turns to Yisun and bows, smiling, "I apologize for the way Sohye is acting. We've been trying to catch butterflies all morning and finally got one, but it flew away when you spoke."
He then looks at the small Princess. "Sohye, you were rude."
She looks down at her feet, mumbling a 'sorry'.
"It's alright." Yisun smiles. "I'm sorry for interrupting you."
"It's still early. No way the ball ended?" The Duke says.
"No." Yisun shakes her head. "I got bored. What about you both? Why aren't you in there?"
"Sohye is too young to attend, they say," Jungkook replies, "And I'm not allowed. Attendees hate seeing me."
Yisun hums, and she feels awful. She wishes she could say something to make Jungkook feel better, but she doesn't know what to say.
"Well." She gulps. "I shall leave now, I have things to do."
Jungkook slightly bows with a smile, and Yisun turns and walks back to her bedroom.
She puts on her equestrian clothing and makes her way to the stable. Just as she is about to walk in, someone walks out, almost hitting her.
Yisun steps back, and her eyes fall on Princess Haewon.
"Shouldn't you be at the ball?" Haewon is quick to ask.
"Shouldn't I ask the same thing?" Yisun replies.
"It's none of your business. I had errands to run," Haewon says.
Yisun raises an eyebrow. "Errands to run in the stable?"
Haewon scoffs. "You're crossing your lines. You're not allowed to ask so much. As I said, it's none of your business."
And with that, she walks away, her shoulder brushing against Yisun's.
Yisun walks in the stable, and hears small babble. She furrows her eyebrows as she walks further inside, stopping to see Hoseok talking to one of the steeds.
"Are you really talking to a horse, Jung Hoseok?" She asks, failing to stop a laughter from escaping her lips.
Hoseok turns to her and smiles, shrugging. "Loneliness can do worse, my lady."
"Mang is waiting for you," He adds, nodding over at the grey steed.
She smiles and walks over to the said horse, and as she caresses it, a cold voice plays in her head, making a shiver run down her spine.
I know best.
