The chains around his wrists clatter as he moves his hands, the heavy metal making it hard to lift them up.
He lets out a sigh and leans his head back on the grimy wall behind him, letting the chains drag his hands down.
There's noise and he can hear it through the big wooden doors separating him from the raging people outside. They're screaming and hollering in anger and excitement.
Of course, Taehyung scoffs, 'let's watch the King's murderer and brother being beheaded'.
A small door to his right opens, and it's still as dark as ever as two figures walk in. Taehyung's eyes fall on Yoongi the first thing, then they travel to Jungkook standing right beside him.
"Thank you, General," Jungkook says, turning to look at Yoongi, "I will take it from here."
"Get ready," Yoongi says, his eyes fixed on Taehyung, "I'm chopping off that bloody head of yours soon."
"I'm honoured that it is you, General," Taehyung replies with a smile, and Yoongi ignores him, bowing at Jungkook and walking back through the small door to leave them alone.
It's silent for a few seconds until Taehyung speaks.
"Came to say goodbye?" He asks, breaking the silence, and for a second he wishes he'd keep on talking to Jungkook because it seems to be the only thing distracting him from the people's yells outside that make his heart beat faster, but he hates to admit it.
"Seokjin did not kill Namjoon," Jungkook says, "The Queen told me."
"I know," Taehyung whispers, "The King told me."
"Right before I killed him," He adds quickly, then averts his gaze to his brother as if awaiting a response.
Jungkook doesn't react whatsoever as he speaks. "Then why did you kill him? Especially that you knew that you will be caught and executed."
Taehyung lets out a small chuckle, and he stares straight back ahead.
"I have nothing to live for anymore," He says in a low voice, shutting his eyes for a few seconds in hope it'll shut the voices from outside, "Nothing can make up for how uselessly I have lived. I was never meant to be Kingㅡthat's what father used to say, at least. And honestly," He turns to Jungkook, "Neither were you."
"I know," Jungkook grumbles, "You made sure I never forget that."
Taehyung laughs at that, but he stops as soon as he starts and shuts his eyes instead. "It is only you now out of all of us, even though you are not even a Queen's child."
"You are absolutely wrong if you think I am taking the throne," Jungkook mutters, shaking his head, "The Queen is the one ruling now."
"She'll get married."
"How do you know?"
"I know."
"Really?"
"Yisun is not one to rule a kingdom," Taehyung finally says with a sigh, "I've known her for a very long time, and trust me when I say she will get married to someone who is actually capable of ruling the kingdom, and that is until her daughter is old enough to take the throne."
"And who may that person be?" Jungkook asks.
Taehyung smiles, turning his head to Jungkook. "I will leave that to you."
The wooden door in front of them suddenly opens, letting in a blinding sunlight as the crowd's cheers noticeably grow louder. Two guards walk in, each holding Taehyung from an arm.
"Let's not meet in the afterlife, shall we?" Taehyung says as he glances at Jungkook, flashing one small smile as he walks out with the guards, and the doors close back.
Jungkook stays still for a few seconds, then he walks through the small door on his right and back up the platform where the Queen is at.
Taehyung looks up, his eyes scanning all the people that have come to watch the execution, his heart beating faster than ever. He stares right ahead, and he sees the Queen sitting somewhere high, surrounded by other Royal Family members, one of which is Jungkook and another, heartbreakingly, is his mother.
He gives her a smile hoping it will wipe the tears falling down her cheeks away, but she just stays silent, her face blank and still.
He walks up a few wooden steps before the guards push him down to his knees. He glances to his left to see Yoongi standing, holding the big sword in his hands.
"You were the one who suggested it to be a public execution, am I right?" Taehyung asks.
The General nods. "Any final words?"
"Good luck," He says then he lays his head down and the crowd abruptly goes silent.
Yoongi does not think much about what Taehyung actually meant as he raises his sword, and Taehyung glances one last time at his mother, and for a second he glimpses her smiling and waving a hand, and he smiles back for the last time.
