Tws: exclusion, and there's one scene where Virgil fucks himself over to please the others

He made progress.

It was slow- So slow he didn't even notice it working for a while. He made sure to do it every few days, though- Stand in the mirror and remind himself why he mattered.

He used to spend days at a time in his room, hiding from the others. He would bring a few water bottles up, and he had the ensuite, so it wasn't a huge problem to spend a week alone from the hateful voices. One day, a few months after he'd started working on himself, he started his routine of shutting himself off. This time, though, it only lasted a day.

He started to get hungry and it didn't take long to convince himself that he had to eat. The second Roman caught eye of him trudging down the stairs, he furrowed his eyebrows and snipped, "What are you doing down here?"

Without missing a beat or even realizing that he spoke, he said, "I gotta eat, too, Princey."

The man stopped, his face falling, and, to his credit, he looked a little guilty. He grumbled to himself and left the room.

One day, around noon, Logan came in while Virgil was fiddling with the coffee maker. "Oh, Anxiety." He looked over his shoulder, before coming closer to lower his voice. "You might want to get out of here. Roman's back from a quest, and he doesn't look happy."

Virgil looked down at the coffee mug in his hand- Plain black, his only current one. "Are you and Patton going to be down here?" Logan bit his lip, and nodded. Virgil straightened his back and, even if he really did just want to go and hide, he put his mug under the coffee maker and said, "Well, then so am I."

One day, way before Virgil started his experiment, Patton had invited him to dinner. His heart swelled with hope and practically bursted open. He'd, stupidly, agreed.

He was so eager for them to accept him that he spent the entire time silent, letting Roman take passive aggressive digs at him and barely eating anything.

He'd lasted twenty minutes before he had to run out crying.

He stopped at the top of the stairs as yelling sounded- Patton yelling. He was angrier than Virgil had still yet to see him. Roman came up to Virgil's room about an hour later, knocking for a good five minutes before Virgil snapped, "What? What do you want now?"

"I'm sorry," he muttered.

"No you're not." Virgil squeezed his eyes shut. "Patton is."

"No." Roman paused for a moment, before, shakily, "I was not acting very... Mature. As much as I can't stand you, well... You should be allowed to feel comfortable outside of your room. Even if we weren't all stuck together."

They both stayed silent for a long time, before Roman quietly asked, "Do you forgive me?"

Virgil swallowed. "Yes." He didn't.

About three months after Virgil started his experiment, Patton invited him to dinner again. He hadn't been back since. He didn't know why he said yes. Maybe he was still desperate for their love. Maybe he thought he deserved it.

He really didn't know.

But he found himself sitting next to Logan anyway, Roman across from him. Patton served them all with a giddy smile.

Virgil spoke freely. He took all three helpings Patton offered him. He snipped at them and he made jokes and once or twice shared some small talk with Roman.

Afterwards, when Logan had retreated to his room and Patton was humming as he cleaned the kitchen, Roman caught Virgil in the hallway in front of his room.

"What do you want, Princey?" He asked.

Roman looked nervous. "I, um... I really need to ask you something."

He straightened up. His mind screamed at him to run- Your door is right there -but he didn't. "Alright."

"You... I could not help but notice how, er... How happy you looked in there." He looked away. "Anxiety, you want to be apart of this family... I can't help but wonder... Why do you insist on being the antagonist?"

He really didn't know.
