Tom was still being positive, and he was there for you as much as he could be, as promised. You didn't think that Tom would run from you when you told him, but you were surprised by how calm and accepting he seemed to be with the whole thing. Maybe it just hadn't really hit him yet.
Anyhow, when you mumbled that you'd be going to your first doctors appointment one morning over a bowl of cereal, Tom insisted on coming with. You tried to tell him no, that it wasn't necessary, but he was adamant. Before the two of you could argue about it any further, Tom was on the phone, cancelling everything he had going on for the next day.
When Tom came back into the kitchen, he had a huge smile plastered to his face as he shook his head playfully, "There, it's settled. Nothing more to argue about. I'm coming with you."
You couldn't help but laugh as you stood up. You gave his shoulder a gentle push as you walked by him to put your bowl in the sink, when he plucked the bowl out of your hands with another smile. "I've got it. No worries."
-
The next morning, you stood at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for Tom to come down so you could leave for the appointment. You let out a loud sigh before yelling up the stairs, "Thomas, I swear to god! We have to go!"
As you finished speaking, Tom appeared at the top of the staircase, tugging his shirt on over his head. "I'm coming, I'm coming. Don't get too worked up."
You crossed your arms and narrowed your eyes at him, letting out a huff, "I can't be late for my first appointment, Tom."
He gave you a smile as he slipped his shoes on, "We won't be late, love, I promise."
When the two of you arrived, you checked in at the front desk and then took a seat next to Tom in the waiting room. Tom's leg was bouncing up and down quickly, and his eyes were darting around the room. He was nervous. You gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze, but before you could say anything, your name was called. You stood up and followed the nurse, Tom only a few steps behind you.
When you got to the examination room, you took a seat on the table, Tom sitting on the chair right next to it. The nurse explained a few things before saying that they were going to draw some blood to absolutely confirm that you were pregnant, and check a few other things.
At the mention of having to get blood drawn, your face went pale, and you bit down on your bottom lip hard, just nodding your head. Tom's eyes went straight to you, and he immediately reached his hand out for you. As Tom had been your best friend for years, he knew of your fear of getting blood drawn, shots, anything to do with needles. You took Tom's hand tightly, and in that moment, it felt like you were back to being just best friends. It felt so nice.
"You two are such a cute couple," the nurse spoke, interrupting your thoughts.
Your face flushed and you shook your head quickly, both you and Tom stammering, "Oh, we're not- we're um-"
This time it was the nurse's turn to look embarrassed. "My apologies. I'm going to draw your blood now, miss."
You quickly looked to Tom, who was still holding your hand tightly, nodding reassuringly. The two of you watched each other intently, not saying anything. This was probably the only real eye contact the two of you had made in a while. When she was done drawing your blood, you loosened your grip on Tom's hand, but he didn't let go of it. You only broke eye contact when the nurse left the room, letting you know that she would be back with the results shortly.
"Are you okay, Y/N/N?" Tom's voice came from beside you the moment the door closed.
Your eyes drifted back to his again, and you managed a small smile. "Yeah, I'm okay." You paused for a moment, glancing down at your hands that were still clasped together. "Thanks for coming with me, Tommy."
Tom squeezed your hand lightly and gave you another smile, "Of course, love. When I said I'd be here every step of the way, I meant it. And now, well... now we're really in this together."
The room went silent again, but this time, it wasn't an awkward silence, it was normal, comfortable. Both of your heads snapped up at the sound of knocking on the door, and the door opening.
The nurse had returned with a stack of papers in her hand. She sat down at the small desk, rifling through the papers for a moment before looking back up to the two of you with a smile on her face. "Well, it looks like you are, indeed, expecting. Congratulations! Would you like to try to get a look at the baby today?" You exchanged a glance with Tom before nodding your head. "Alright, I'll be right back, then!"
She was back within a few minutes, and asked you to lift your shirt, letting you know that the gel was probably going to be cold on your stomach. You laid back slightly, lifting your shirt to expose your skin and then closed your eyes, gasping in surprise at how cold the gel actually was. Tom chuckled at your reaction, and you reached out to hit his arm lightly.
The nurse brought your attention back to the screen, "Because you're still pretty early on, only about seven or eight weeks, there's a chance that we might not see much of anything, but we'll see what we can do. At the very least, this will confirm your pregnancy." You nodded your head and closed your eyes once more to try to relax.
A few moments later, Tom nudged his hand against yours so you would open your eyes. When you did, you found Tom pointing at the screen, a giant smile on his face, "There. It's right there! Do you see it?"
You couldn't help the smile that had found it's way to your lips as well, as you noticed the tiny blip on the screen. As you'd been warned, there wasn't much to see, but it was definitely something. Tom's hand found its way to yours, intertwining your fingers together slowly.
"This is real now," Tom breathed out softly. The smile that was on Tom's face was possibly the best thing you'd ever seen, and you couldn't help but shift your gaze to him. He was now standing next to you, his elbow was resting near your head, his body leaning into your side just slightly.
When you were asked if you wanted a picture, you both immediately blurted out a yes and then exchanged yet another smile.
Shortly after that, you had a few pictures of your tiny little being printed out, and you were on your way out to the car. Tom just couldn't wipe the stupid smile from his face, and that made you so happy. It was so nice to see that he was really in this with you.
As you made a move to get into the driver's side of the car to drive home again, Tom cut you off. "I'm driving, Y/N."
You let out a loud huff as you got into the passenger seat, buckling your seatbelt. "I'm only pregnant, Thomas Stanley. I am most definitely capable of driving."
He laughed loudly in response as he started the car. "Don't care, love. I'm going to do as much as I can for the both of you."
