"Aro will want us incapacitated before he attacks. Jane will try to take me out first because I can anticipate their moves," Edward said.
"Too bad we don't all have your shield," Garrett mused.
Bella sighed. "Doesn't help me fight, though."
"No, but you could help the rest of us, if you could project it," Tanya replied.
"What do you mean?" Bella asked.
"I mean shield someone other than yourself."
Bella looked around. "Is that possible?"
"Gifts can be developed," Carlisle said. "Over time."
"At first, mine was just in my palms. Now I can radiate it all over my body," Kate said, demonstrating an electric current.
"How do you do it?" Bella asked, taking Kate's hand, squeezing a little too hard. "Tell me."
Kate looked pointedly at Bella. "Ow."
The group soon moved into the forest, gathering to help Bella with her ability.
"You need to visualize it. See how it moves. What color it is. Now picture it expanding. Will it to go beyond you," Kate commanded.
Beatrice and Alec were watching underneath the tree that Alistair was standing on top of on a tree branch. Alistair was interested in if Bella could succeed. Bella stared intently in front of her. She pushed it slightly, but only managed to bring up her shield for a moment.
"I think she needs something to motivate her," Kate suggested.
Edward took a step forward, taking his hands out of his pockets.
Bella shook her head. "No."
Edward smiled reassuringly, but he didn't look convinced. "It's all right. I can take it."
Garrett rolled his eyes. "He says that now."
"Focus, Bella, or he's gonna be hurting," Emmett mocked.
Edward reached his hand out.
Bella shook her head. "Edward, I'm not ready to do this yet."
Kate touched his hand, sending a painful electric shock through him. The contact with her hand that crackled with electricity immediately sent Edward to the ground. Bella couldn't reach her shield out enough to protect her husband.
"I'm sorry. I said that I wasn't ready," she apologized.
Emmett sighed. "Dude, you're not motivating her."
Edward grunted. "You want to try?"
Emmett put his hands up by his face and backed away. Bella tried to extend her shield further again, but when Kate touched Edward, she sent another electric shock through his body. Edward screamed in pain.
"Kate!" Bella scolded.
Kate smirked. "You seem to lack incentive. Shall I go see if Renesmee's awake?"
"Are you crazy?" Bella questioned.
Kate shrugged. "All right." She raised her hands, wiggling her fingers. "This one's on full power."
As Kate neared Edward, he scrunched his eyebrows tightly. Bella stared intensely at him, trying to will his shield. Kate touched Edward's hand, but he didn't scream in pain. Bella managed to bring up her shield and protect Edward from Kate's power. Alistair leaned forward, seemingly surprised.
Edward smiled. "It's painful, but it's bearable."
Bella smiled back with a nod. "Okay, we should go again."
"Emmett?" Edward gestured.
Emmett shook his head. "I'm good."
Beatrice chuckled, hopping over to Bella and Edward. "It makes a lot of sense now. Whenever I fell asleep while Bella was in the house, I rarely got nightmares. If I did, then they weren't bad at all. You picked good, Edward."
Edward smiled and kissed Bella's head. "I know, Beatrice."
Bella smiled back at Beatrice. "Maybe we should try it with Alec."
Emmett whistled. "I'm out."
"I'll do it," Beatrice said. "I don't mind."
"I don't want to hurt you," Alec stated as he flashed to her side.
"If it was Emmett, you'd be excited to hurt him. Besides, Bella will do great," Beatrice reassured.
Alec reluctantly nodded. Black mist slowly reached out to Beatrice to take her sight away. Bella's eyes narrowed in concentration as she stared at Beatrice. Beatrice stared at Alec with a loving smile on her face, reassuring her that he wouldn't hurt her. Once the black most reached her vicinity, it traveled over an invisible shield around Beatrice. Alec's eyes widened slightly as Bella smiled and clapped in glee. Alec removed his mist.
"Did you see that, Beatrice?" Bella asked.
She smiled. "Of course I did. You did splendidly, Bella." Then, she turned to Alec. "I told you you wouldn't hurt me."
