As the snow was falling, the vampires and Jacob set up a camp in the woods. Jacob gathered more wood and dropped it on the ground. Benjamin used his powers to produce fire from his fingertips, then threw it on the woods to start a fire.
Jacob grinned. "That's what I'm talkin' about. A little pre-battle bonfire. Telling war stories." Jacob sat next to Benjamin and looked across the fire to see the other vampires standing. "Or just standing there like frickin' statues."
Suddenly, Garrett sat next to them on a log by the fire.
"Name any American battle. I was there," Garrett stated.
"Little Bighorn," Jacob announced.
Garrett pinched his index and thumb close together. "I came this close to biting Custer. But the Indians got him first."
Just then, Kate sat next to Garrett.
"Try Oleg's assault on Constantinople. He didn't win that one on his own," Kate mused.
"If you're talking battles, you're talking the Eleven Years' War. No one does rebellion like the Irish," Liam proudly said.
"You lost the Eleven Years' War," Garrett stated.
Liam nodded. "Aye. But it was one hell of a rebellion."
Vladimir caught the attention of everyone. "When we ruled, everything came to us. Prey, diplomats, favor-seekers - such was our power. But we never put on white hats and called ourselves saints."
"We were honest about what we were," Stefan revealed.
Vladimir nodded. "We sat still for a very long time. We didn't notice we were beginning to petrify."
Stefan hummed. "Perhaps the Volturi did us a favor when they burned our castles."
"We've been waiting 1,500 years to return that favor. We have been ready to do battle for ages."
The other vampires listened to them reveal their life story as to why they were helping the Olympic Coven.
"Makes sense," Alec said, pulling out strands of wood from a log in his hand as if it was string cheese.
Alec caught the attention of everyone. Beatrice was sitting next to him, rubbing his arm soothingly. He pulled off more bits of the log he was holding, throwing them into the fire. He fiddled with the log before looking up.
"The Volturi are monsters. I, myself, included. I am sorry that everything you've worked for is gone. Your home is gone because of them. You have every right to be angry with them," Alec admitted.
Vladimir and Stefan exchanged glances before looking back at Alec.
"It takes courage to say that. I suppose we shouldn't refer to you as part of the Volturi any longer, but we will always remind you that you once were," Stefan said.
Alec nodded, finally throwing the whole log into the fire. "A fine punishment."
