It had been a Monday morning at around seven thirty-five, as Valerie Pierce was entering the small, and rather gloomy halls of Midtown High School. The dark-haired teenager was strolling to her crummy old locker to retrieve her books that she required for her advanced classes. The frank girl had always thrived at school, she constantly tried to be the very best at everything so she could reach her full potential.

   "Hey, loser."

The stubborn girl turned her head to see a smirking Michelle Jones sauntering her way over to her. Valerie and Michelle had known each other since freshman year of high school, and had gotten along due to how similar they were. Instead of socializing with fellow classmates, they'd prefer to sit in the corner of the room with their noses in a book, and wouldn't associate with anyone. They both got rather annoyed at anyone who would talk to them, and the two girls were a bit mouthy at times. Eventually though, as they moved into sophomore year; Michelle started making more friends but never failed to hang out with Valerie whenever she could.

"What do you want?" Valerie replied half-heartedly, looking back inside her locker to grab her books.

Michelle tiredly reached her hand inside her worn out backpack, holding out When Breath Becomes Air, a book she had borrowed from Valerie a few days prior. Valerie beloved reading. She loved opening a novel and getting swept up into a whole other universe expressing the other character's feelings, memories, the pain or anger, confusion, and sadness. Books where her elusion from reality, it was a world where she could forget everything that was going on around her. It was her escape.

"Here, I forgot to give this to you yesterday, and what's with the mood today?" Michelle questioned with crossed arms, glaring at the girl.

"I'm in a 'mood' Because I studied all night for the physics test, and I'm tired." Valerie said in an indignant tone, running her hand through her hair.

"Why do you waste so much time studying?
You don't even need it, you're like one of the smartest people I know."

The clever girl smiled and shrugged, "Like Albert Einstein once said 'Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.'"

Michelle frowned at the girl with hazel eyes, "What is that supposed to mean?"

Valerie gave the the tall teenager a small smile, gladly giving an explanation, "It means if you accept that there are areas that need improvement, you can try and work on them to become better."
