The shrieks of children and Dally's deep coughing filled my ears.  Tears spilled out of my eyes uncontrollably from smoke irritation and my lungs burned.  I knew I needed to get out of the church, and fast. I looked around for Ponyboy, but he was no longer next to me.  "Pony!" I yelled out.  There was no answer.

A few flaming beams crashed down from the roof of the burning church. My eyes widened and utter panic rose in my chest.  "Pony!" I shouted again, louder.  This time, a huge cracking noise and a scream ripped through the air.  Ponyboy's scream.

"Pony!"  I was breathing heavily now, and I was about to run and find him, but before I could, I felt two strong hands grab my shoulders.  They yanked me off of the floor of the collapsing church and swiftly threw me to the ground.

"Jesus Christ!  Johnny!"  Was that Dally?  I could feel myself drifting away, and fast.  I heard the crushing demolition of what had been me and Ponyboy's home for the past week.  Was that a cry out for help?  Whatever it was, it was the last thing I heard before slipping into unconsciousness.
