Love Will Find a Way (Pikachu x Buneary Fanfic Revised)

Chapter 6 - Titles are full of spoilers

"I remember that you liked me." Pikachu's gaze stayed fixed forward. For whatever reason, that statement had caused his cheeks to flush and his body to tingle with a strange sensation. There was silence for a moment before Buneary's cute laughter pricked his ears.

"Those were the days," She smiled, hugging Pikachu closely once again before pulling away. "but now I have a partner, my own special someone." Pikachu felt his heart sink like a cinder block in the ocean. He sat quietly, unresponsive as he let Buneary nurse him back to health. He couldn't find any words to say to her. Everything he thought to say just didn't feel right. Line after line popped into his head, and line after line was discarded in place of silence. As they sat quietly with one another, Buneary began to speak once again. "You've been gone for so many years now Pikachu, it'd be silly for me to still have those feelings for you."

"R-Right... Silly..." He muttered under his breath.

"I understand you know." Buneary cooed, rubbing an Oran berry ointment on the electric mouse's back. "Back then, and even now, you've had so many more important things to focus on. You're like a pillar for all your friends, the backbone of your team. You keep the peace, protect everyone..." Buneary sat still and silent for a moment, abruptly stopping to rub the soothing ointment on Pikachu's wounds. "I'm sorry I was selfish enough to try and get in the way of that..." Her words hit the mouse hard as his eyebrows furrowed with a mix of confusion and concern. 

"What are you--"

"I was so obsessed with you! Being by your side, always being there to support you, being your partner..." Involuntarily Pikachu swallowed hard, continuing to listen. "I couldn't see just how much of a burden I was until after we stopped travelling together. When I saw how you and Ash were training together for the title of champion, distancing yourself from everyone, I realised that I had been in your way for so long." Taking a moment to collect herself, Buneary pulled away after quickly finishing dressing Pikachu's wound. "I'm sorry for being a burden all these years, for trying to tie you down to contests with me and stopping you from being the best you could be. I have someone now, who I'm not a burden to, and who is pursuing contests just like me." 

Pikachu turned slowly, looking at Buneary with a saddened gaze. As if waking from a dream, Buneary's eyes widened and she shook her head gently. "Look at me, getting all down and broody." He giggled, placing a hand on her cheek. "I'll be heading off now, so be safe. I think Infernape and the others are out somewhere toward the forest, and Ash should be inside with Dawn." Turning to hop away, Buneary stopped for a moment, an almost sad smile spreading on her lips. "Goodbye Pikachu." Pikachu desperately wanted to call out to her, to ask her to stay and talk about what had been bothering her. These thoughts and feelings she seemed so pained by, they were ones she'd been harbouring for years without anyone to talk to them about. He wanted so much to sit there with her and clear up her mind, to tell her that she'd never been any sort of burden to anyone, let alone him. But as he turned to reached out to stop her, no words escaped his throat. He was silent, unable to speak, to tell her what he so desperately wanted to. All he could do was sit and watch as she hopped into the distance and disappeared.

That was heavy, don't you think? There are a few days till Xmas and what do I decide to do? Write a chapter in this story that reflects the damaged psyche of a character who thinks that all she's ever done for someone she's admired for so long was bring them down. How festive! Well, I best be on my way. Xmas cards to write and whatnot, the usual business of this holiday season. Be well dear internet dwellers, and a merry Xmas to all.
