the citizens of easthaven absolutely adored calum. it's not because of his charming smile or his looks, he's just too pure for the world. the prince is always wanted to help others, rich or poor, no one should be treated differently just because one has money and the other does not.that's why calum is always nice to the servants at the castle. what is hitting and yelling at them going to do? it scares them, that's the only thing they get out of it. why do royalty have to have other people clean up their messes? calum is perfectly fine with washing his own dish or clothes.
calum visited the village every wednesday. after the citizens realized that he is different from his father and other royalty, they didn't fear calum. they looked forward to seeing the prince because it's not everyday where a prince says hello to his people, seeing if everyone is in good hands.
calum was told many times by the citizens that he would be a great king, and that made him jubilant. hearing that made him know what he was doing was right, and that he wouldn't be hated.
king david is a great man, just not a great king. instead of listening to the people of his kingdom, he listens to the other kings. the king has made some not very good choices in his years of ruling. his people didn't necessarily hate the king, there were just some choices and decisions that they did not agree with.
this visit to the village was different, though. calum was going to bring ashton with him, considering the boy hasn't been out of the castle grounds in god who knows how long.
ashton has always wanted to go out to the village, but at the same time he didn't want to get in trouble, nor get the prince in trouble. he can't handle king david's yelling and hits. he's surprised they've never been caught, and he hopes it stays that way.
the village was quite large. small markets and stores were lined up next to each other. a stoned path was laid on the ground, leading to different stores and even outside of the village.
"so, where would you like to go first?" the prince asked, helping ashton off his horse.
ashton looked around, the place packed with people. he gulped, not used to being around an atmosphere like this. calum noticed, and hesitated before slipping his hand into ashton's. "it's okay, everyone is nice here."
ashton nodded, taking a moment to get used to the area. he squeezed calum's hand, letting him know he was ready and they began walking.
ashton looked around, the village loud from chats amongst one another and the sound of shoes slapping against the pavement. there were people dressed in clothes similar to ashton's and some were dripping with expensive silks and felts. the village was for everyone, welcoming all.
"the prince is here!" someone shouted, causing all eyes to drift to calum, and everyone bowed.
calum waved and smiled. "carry on everyone."
immediately everyone continued what they were doing, and calum lead ashton further into the village.
"you're so kind to them, why?" ashton asked.
"why treat people differently just because i'm royalty and they are not? i treat them like everyone should be treated, equally. it is the same reason as i treat you and the other servants." calum responded.
calum was literally prince charming.
