"staring at it won't make it go faster."

sam squints his eyes, the blue orbs still fixated on the clock above the blackboard as he huffs. he can feel his classmate's insistent gaze on him but he doesn't move. he doesn't recognize the other's voice though, so it must be someone he's never talked to.

"staring at me won't make me want to talk to you." he shoots back, a frown etching onto his features. he's always frowning.

the blonde isn't known as the friendliest person in the school, he's far from it actually. samuel always seems to be in a sour mood, he keeps to himself, avoids people. and it's not because of them, it's because of himself. there's a sort of anger hidden at the bottom of his heart, an anger directed towards himself. an anger that controls his every move, every sentence, that controls him.

however, when he turns his head towards his classmate, that anger melts away in a split second and he takes his statement back because holy shit, that smile takes his breath away.

quickly he loses his ability to speak, his throat dry as he stares at the brunette seated at the desk next to his. the boy's lips are curled into a welcoming grin, bright blue eyes sparkling with what looks like happiness. sam wouldn't know how that feels.

"and staring at me won't stop me from looking at your pretty face."

"oh, so you're colby." sam states, rolling his eyes because despite not caring about others, he still sees and hears a lot of things.

he's not one to believe rumors, especially ever since one was made about elton. his best friend (and the only one he ever spends time with), according to the whole school, had supposedly beaten a sophomore up for some kind of stupid reason but in reality, elton might have a tough appearance, the last thing he'd ever do is treat someone in such a violent way.

when it comes to colby, though, the rumors happen to be true. nothing too bad, it's just no secret to anybody that the brunette's a huge flirt. only pretty words and sly compliments leave the boy's lips. oh well, at least he's not known for sleeping with every person he meets.

"have we met before ? 'cause i don't think i could forget someone as beautiful as you."

with another roll of his eyes sam forces himself to turn back to the front of the class because no matter how intense colby's gaze is, he's not the kind of person sam wants to associate with.

"we haven't and i actually intended to keep it that way." and with that sam shoves his notebook and pencil case in his backpack and zips it, the bell's finally rang and he cannot wait to be home and away from this hellhole he's stuck in for another year. "see you never."

colby scoffs, hurrying to follow sam when the boy rushes out of the classroom. sam doesn't stop himself from groaning, why can't he just let him be ? sam's not fun to be around, and colby will find out soon enough if he keeps hanging around.

"c'mon pretty boy, at least tell me your name ?" the brunette pleads in a soft voice, planting himself in front of sam to stop him from walking further.

"it's none of your business." sam hisses, going to get around colby but being stopped once more. "and can you stop calling me pretty ? 'cause i'm not." and perhaps it's sam's insecurities showing through his facade but he hopes colby doesn't catch on the sad undertone that his voice takes.

colby scoffs again, rolling his mesmerizing blue eyes as he takes a step closer to sam. "yeah right. lying makes you go to hell."

sam can't help the sarcastic laugh that escapes his lips. "haven't you heard ? i'm gay, i'm already going to hell."

colby's face lights up at that and he lets out a small chuckle. "great, let's be gay together."

"is that the best you got ?" sam asks, one eyebrow raising as he crosses his arms over his chest. "from what people say, i expected you to be better."

colby's eyebrows scrunch up in confusion and he opens his mouth to respond but it's too late, sam's already walking through the frond door and colby has to jog to catch up.

his fingers wrap around the blonde's wrist, spinning him around gently so that they're face to face again. sam looks up at him expectantly, a mixture of boredom and curiosity painting his face.

"let me show you what i got then."

sam sighs but still finds himself asking with interest, "how ?"

"go on a date with me ?"

sam's heart skips a beat, surprise clear on his face and his mouth hanging open in disbelief. he's speechless, confused, almost unconvinced. "w-why ?"

colby shrugs. "you're cute. and i bet you look even cuter when you smile."

sam curses under his breath when he feels his skin heat up, his cheeks tinted with a beautiful pink. suddenly he feels small, his head low. "you don't mean it. any of it. you don't want to go on a date with me, okay ? it'll just be a waste of time for you."

"allow me to judge that myself."

sam timidly glances up when a hand reaches for him and hangs in the air, awaiting his own. "n-now ?" he stutters out, eyes flicking from colby's hand to the boy's face.

the brunette smiles sweetly, genuinely, he nods softly and chuckles. "yeah. i can't wait to see that wonderful smile of yours."

"stop." sam almost whines, his smile is not 'wonderful' or 'cute'. he hates it.

he's tempted to say no, to turn around and flee the scene, yet he can't bring himself to. not when colby's smile is so big and bright, his cheeks raising in an almost childlike way and his single dimple showing.

"okay." he finally mutters, slipping his hand in colby's and letting the boy drag him towards the end of the parking lot, where the brunette unlocks a red, old toyota corolla and opens the door for him. "thanks."

colby responds with a smile, slams the car door and soon he's sitting down behind the steering wheel.

and as he drives off and fills the silence with gentle flirting and quiet laughs, perhaps sam feels the anger at the bottom of his heart slowly transform into something light, something fuzzy and it makes him feel all giggly.

perhaps that's when sam feels happy for the first time in a long, long while.
