a sigh is the first sign.

a drawn out, deep exhale full of nothing but annoyance.

all directed to colby.

it isn't on purpose. sam can't remember one time he's even gotten close to being upset with his boyfriend, colby is an angel and sam doesn't understand how he does it but the brunet's never annoyed him in any way.

so really, it should not be aimed at colby.

yet it is.

at first, sam doesn't even realize he does it. sitting at the dining table, papers spread all over the surface and head buried in his hands, he cuts off colby's rambling with the sigh. it escapes him before he can even process the action and it's not until colby suddenly falls silent that sam reacts.

instantly his head lifts, eyebrows slightly furrowed. "babe ? why'd you stop ?"

"what's wrong ?" colby asks, completely dodging sam's question as a small pout settles on his plump lips.

"nothing." sam finds himself replying too quickly but too uncertainly. "i'm fine."

and although it's meant to soothe colby's nerves, his boyfriend's answer does the complete opposite. after so many years with him, colby knows sam like the back of his hand and holy shit, did sam just lie to him ?

within a heartbeat colby has moved from his spot at the kitchen island to sam's side, arms wrapping around the blonde's neck from behind and chin resting on the top of his head.

"what's wrong ?" colby asks again, voice softer, quieter, and tone laced with concern.

with another sigh, sam leans back against colby's chest, basking in the feeling of comfort he's craved all day.

nothing is wrong per se, he's just feeling a bit overwhelmed. stressed. a teeny tiny bubble of anxiety has settled in the pit of his stomach, but it'll go away. he knows it will, so really, he's fine.

"i'm fine, i promise." he assures, tilting his head back the best he could to give colby an unconvincing smile.

colby places a kiss on sam's forehead before releasing him, ignoring the way his heart drops at the lie. he takes the chair next to sam's instead and faces him, pulling one knee to his chest.

"bold of you to think you can even try to lie to me." colby says in what he wants to be a playful tone, but the words come out as more pained than anything else. he tilts his head to the side, eyes narrowing as he awaits a reaction, an answer, just something from sam.

it never comes though.

instead, sam begins to gather all the papers that are scattered across the table, stacking them neatly the way he always does. his gaze remains fixated on them, trying desperately not to shift to colby.

that is, until a gentle hand wraps around his wrist and another pries the pile of papers from his grip. he lets it happen, sighs one more time and colby truly has to refrain himself from slapping him.

"spill it, love, it's so obvious that something is bothering you." colby mutters while walking over to the drawer he knows sam keeps all the important documents in. he drops the stack of papers in there and joins sam at the table once more, assuming his previous spot.

"it's just..." sam trails off, playing with his fingers as he inhales deeply. "it's just work stuff. my boss is being pushy, is all."

"pushy ?" colby questions confusedly, scooting his chair closer.

"he's giving us more work than the usual." sam explains simply, before hurrying to add, upon seeing how colby's frown deepens, "it'll ease down eventually, i'm pretty sure. it's just very sudden."

colby has trouble believing him, and sam has trouble believing himself, but he stands by his words anyway and looks over to colby in hopes that he'll just drop the subject.

and reluctantly, colby does. he can see it in sam's eyes, hear it in his voice, that sam doesn't want to talk about it. colby's dying to know what's happening and why sam suddenly looks so down, but if sam's decided not to dwell on it, then colby will respect that decision.

he shouldn't.

a sigh is the first sign.

the first of a long list.
