Chapter Three: Homecoming
Reposted
It is now three and a half weeks later, and Rebekah and I stroll into the school building together. As we pass by a bulletin board in the main hallway, she rips a sheet of paper from it.
"Please tell me we are going tonight," Rebekah exclaims. She's holding a red flier for the Homecoming game."I guess so," I smile at her as I drag my eyes away from the screen of my phone. I've never cared much for sporting events, but it was Homecoming. I had/have to go show some support to our team.
"Good!" Rebekah shouts, her green eyes glimmering.
"As long as we sit away from the cheerleaders," I roll my eyes in annoyance.
"Well, they'll be all over the field. We'll just have to keep moving away from them," Rebekah chuckles, tossing the flier in the trash. We only really need to worry about one specific cheerleader.
"Whatever it takes," I smile, "if I have to listen to Brittany's loud mouth all night, I might intentionally throw myself on the field and let them all take turns tackling me."
Rebekah laughs loud, "I might hop in there with ya. Especially if I have to hear her trying to flirt with that new guy again. It's so sad. I kind of feel sorry for her."
"No way, Rebekah. Don't feel sorry for her. She doesn't deserve any attention or anything from us. To me, she's just a really, really annoying fly that's always flying around. Bothering me with her presence. Buzzing constantly. I'm always trying to ignore but at the end, you have to fist the fly, right?"
"I'm down with that," Rebekah chuckles, "just to make it stop buzzing."
"Right?"
All of a sudden, the fly herself comes skipping down the hallway in her skimpy cheer uniform. She's running directly toward the new guy. In the last few weeks of school, I learned only one thing about this mysterious new guy- his name. Austin Spencer. I genuinely feel sorry for him as Brittany throws herself at him for like, the millionth time. It's written all over his face as he just stiffens that he isn't interested. Why can't this girl take a dang hint?
"I think I'm going to hurl," Rebekah comments, turning up her nose.
We go to class. The day goes by slowly, and finally, the final bell rings. There is a pep rally, but I choose to skip out on the headache. Rebekah and I go to her house to get game-ready. We are both wearing our team's colours- red and black. Rebekah is wearing a black sleeveless T-shirt with the word "winner" written in red. I'm wearing a crimson long-sleeved Ashden Red Devil's t-shirt. She is wearing leggings, and I'm wearing skinny black jeans. We leave a little earlier than we need to just so we can get decent seats. Preferably somewhere far away from the fly. Rebekah drives her blue Mustang GT to the stadium's parking lot where only a few other vehicles are parked. We climb out and make our way to the cement bleachers. We made it there sooner than the ticket-givers, so I guess we are watching the game for free.
Rebekah and I easily find a place to sit and get comfortable. Well, as comfortable as we can on the hard bleachers. On the field, the cheerleaders and football players are starting their warm-ups. The mere sight of Brittany dancing around in her skin-tight uniform is enough to make my stomach churn. I can't stand that girl. She revolts me.
People suddenly start rolling in the gate entrance, and before we know it, the stadium is swarmed with supporters. Some people bring their own food with them and stadium chairs to make them comfortable. I feel claustrophobic when classmates sit on each side of Rebekah and me, but what am I supposed to expect? It is the Homecoming game.
The team captains from each team join in the center of the field for the coin toss. The home team gets the ball to start the game, which means we get the ball. Everyone on our side of the bleachers clap. The first play is a double-reverse pass down the field for a gain of forty yards. Everyone leaps to their feet in celebration.
Our quarterback throws the ball down the middle, and it's intercepted by the other team. Now, everyone is booing."BOO!" Rebekah shouts in disappointment.
The next three quarters got even worse. Our quarterback Brandon, is blindsighted and knocked to the field hard. He isn't moving. People start looking around. Concerned. Worried. Anxious. What happened?
Suddenly, I start to hear sirens. The on-field ambulance rush to his side. After a few minutes I hear people around us start talking. He's okay, but has a fractured ankle. He won't be able to play in the rest of the game, and we are down fourteen points. I glance at Rebekah. I'm just about to ask her if she's ready to leave, when out of the blue, the coaches call Austin Spencer to the field. He's been sitting out the entire game, but now they are going to let him play the quarterback role. Seems like a bad idea, even to me.
Austin speeds out to the field. It's the fourth quarter, and I'm starting to think our chances of winning are firmly at zero percent when all of a sudden, he changes my mind. Austin escapes the pocket after a blitz and pitches down the field to the receiver in the endzone for a touchdown! The kicker steps up and scores a perfect field goal. The crowd cheers. Even the injured quarterback cheers.
Rebekah and I jump up and down in the stands, screeching as loudly as our lungs will allow when another touchdown is scored. We are now in the lead with only twenty seconds remaining on the clock. Austin leads his team to a victory. I watch as Brittany The Bitch rushes towards him, arms wide open. He swiftly steps to the side, letting her plummet to the ground, and runs along to cheer with the rest of the boys. Rebekah and I look at one another for a second and simply cannot contain the laughter this time. Neither can the rest of the audience who witnessed her fall. Lots of people are laughing at her, and there it is. The cry-baby face.
