Chapter Five: First Move
It's Monday, and I am nervous, yet excited about seeing Austin again. I don't know how this will work. I just silently hope it all goes as planned as I step into the hallway of Ashden Ridge. I've only ever been out on three dates in my entire life. How do I make him believe that I'm interested?
How do I make a move? How does someone even make the first move? What do you do? And what if he instantly notices that it's an act the whole time? An attempt at killing the fly?
I tuck my hair behind my ear as I step down the hallway toward my locker. Rebekah is already standing at hers, waiting for me.
"Good morning," she smiles, "ready to get this show on the road?""Yep," I smile, "I sure am."
"I saw him walk by a few minutes ago. Brittany was following him again," Rebekah sighs.
"That doesn't surprise me," I say, putting in my combination.
"Yeah, she's so desperate. It's pathetic," Rebekah leaned against her locker.
We walk to class together and sit down. Mrs. Smith, my English teacher, is scribbling on the whiteboard with an erasable marker when Austin walks into the classroom. His eyes scan the room, stopping on me. He smiles softly and walks to his desk. Behind me, I feel Rebekah kick my seat.
I grin at her over my shoulder.
English class flies by and then so does every other class leading up to lunch. Rebekah and I had gotten separated in different classes, so I walk to the lunch room on my own and wait for her. I am starving, so I grab an apple and a water to snack on. I sit alone at a random table and take a bite of the juicy fruit.
Straight across from me, I notice Austin at the "jock" table. He is talking and laughing with his friends, and Brittany is sitting right beside him trying to butt into his conversations. I shake my head at her and glance down at my apple. I chug some water and then steal another glance at Austin. His eyes are on me now.
I take a deep breath and look away. I scan the lunch line for Rebekah, but she isn't coming yet. I sigh heavily. When I look back up, Austin has left Brittany at the table and is heading in my direction.
Come on hurry up Rebekah!
I shift awkwardly in my seat as he sits across from me.
"Hey, Roxanne," he warmly smiles at me."Hey," I say apathetically. I sneak a glance at Brittany. I can literally see the smoke extinguishing from her ears. She is livid. Time to really rub it in.
I face Austin with a flirty grin."So, um. I was wondering," Austin says, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
I smile, staring into his sea blue eyes anxiously awaiting for him to go on."Would you want to maybe hang out sometime?" Austin asks finally with an exhale.
"Sure," I say a little louder than usual, "I'd love to hang out sometime." I glance at Brittany as I say this.
"Great," he nods cheerfully and fidgets with his backpack. He pulls out a notebook and scribbles on a sheet of notebook paper.
"Here's my number," he smiles, ripping the sheet of paper out and sliding to me, "hit me up sometime." He winks and slides out of his seat.
I could feel my cheeks burning. Why? Why are they burning?Rebekah joins me at the table shortly after. "WHAT. WAS. THAT?" She exclaims as she drops on her usual seat beside me.
"He gave me his number," I bit my bottom lip.
Rebekah chuckles lowly, stealing a look at Brittany at the table across from ours. She has her arms folded and her bottom lip puckered out. Austin sits at the table a few seats down from her, and his eyes are still on me. I grin at him and drop my head."Wow, you're doing a great job so far," Rebekah whispers, "I'm impressed."
"Thanks," I smile.
This is going to be easier than I thought. Much easier.****
Hope it was to your standards 😂 I will update soon. 🌸
