I spotted Dodds through the binoculars around my neck. He wobbled down the steps and started down the large gravel path towards his destination. Nate snuck in and place an anonnymus tip on Dodds' desk 15 minutes ago, and it looks like he found it.
"The eagle is flying home, I repeat, the eagle is flying home," I whisper into the walkie-talkie.
"Roger that," I recognized Nathan's voice speak.
I climbed down the close together branches of the hemlock that I took my perch in and landed gracefully on my toes.
As Dodds walked on to the staff cabins, I followed him at a distance on the forest's edge. It was almost dinner time, so it was light out. I wore the ugliest green shirt I own, with brown leggings. How I wound up with these clothes in my duffel, I have no clue. But I am never wearing this ugly ass outfit ever again.
Dodds reached the set of 20 cabins at the edge of the camp. Most of the employees went home and came back in the morning, but some stayed in their designated cabins. I dove into the nearest set of concealing bushes at a safe distance from the first cabin.
The old man pulled a hanky from his pocket and dabbed his forehead as he trudged the creaky steps to the porch of Cabin 1. I snickered to myself, already knowing what was about to be discovered.
Dodds nearly shrieked when he stepped inside his cabin. I could only imagine how red his face his with anger, and how awkward it must be to think that he has to sleep in that bed tonight.
Looking through my binoculars, I watched Dodds storm out of the cabin, with Chase's shirt collar in his right hand and the skank's lame excuse for a shirt in his left. I'm surprised that they had clothes on. Maybe Dodds forced them to dress out of decency.
I hold the radio to my smirking lips and said "Mission is successful," I released the talk button and heard a hoot and holler from the other end. "Report to lake with swimsuits and towels. Don't want to seem like we were in any part of this, got it? Over,"
I heard Jeremy's calm voice reply "Copy that. See you soon, over,"
I clicked the radio dial off and genuinely smiled. Probably my best prank yet, I thought.
As soon as Dodds and the two miserable looking teens in his hands were out of earshot, I hollered for no one in particular. Maybe just for my own amusement.
I stepped out of my hiding place and skipped merrily back to the B Section. I figured that Jer and Nate were waiting for me at the lake because their position was closer to our cabin than mine. I opened and slammed the screen door and barely managed to hide my shock when I saw Chase himself walking out of the closet carrying his luggage.
"Hey man," I managed. He was supposed to be with Dodds. "What's goin' on?"
"What's it to you?" He spat.
"Jeez man," I walk past him and into the closet to grab my own duffel. "Jer and Nate and I are going swimming in the lake. Wanna join?" I ask, trying to be friendly and oblivious.
"Can't," Chase spat yet again. "I'm under cabin arrest-"
I laughed out loud and I pull out my swimsuit from my duffel. "Is that some lame form of house arrest?"
Chase didn't acknowledge my question and continues his sentence without answering.
"Like I said. Under cabin arrest. Gotta spend the week in a secluded cabin away from everyone else. And I have one week of camp detention,"
I managed to contain my laughter. He has no idea that I know what happened. "What exactly could you have done that got you those consequences?" I think that sentence sounded more sympathetic in my head.
"Is it really any of your business?" Damn he cranky.
"Sorry man, you brought it up. I just asked about swimming," I stood up and walked out of the closet and was about to shut the bathroom door behind me when Chase asked "Why are you wearing those hideous clothes?"
Excuse, Ash, you need an excuse.
My mind swirled. Which excuse shall get me out of this question without suspicion?
"Uh, manhunt," Good.
"Manhunt? When it's light out?" His left eyebrow raised and he got a cute vertical crease right above his nose and in between his eyebrows.
Woah.
Ash, we will talk about your adjectives later.
I'm literally talking to myself I think I need help.
"You can play when it's light out,"
"Whatever," His face was somewhat relaxed but tensed again when an unfamiliar voice said. "C'mon boy, you're taking too long,"
I heard him groan through the bathroom door and then when I was sure he was gone, I let out the breath I was holding in. That was close, but a good enough cover up.
I slipped my bikini on and put a band tank and boyfriend shorts over it. Grabbing my drying towel from the cabin porch railing, I walked to the lake where Jer and Nate were talking to some other guy on the beach.
Not caring if I interrupt their conversation or not, I say "Hey guys, sorry it took so long I get held-"
And that, ladies and gents, is the moment I look in to the most captivating and beautiful eyes to ever look in to. I scanned the guy's facial features. I picked up on my radar, a jaw of a god, a little acne here and there, and the most charming and pink lips.
"Hi," the beautiful stranger spoke. His brown hair was styled into a manly and attractive quiff with little product, and his teeth nearly blinded me when he smiled.
His voice was not super deep, but raspy, in a sexy way. The sound echoed throughout my ear canals and sent armies of shivers up my spine.
"H-hey there," I cleared my throat loudly and nudged Jeremy in his arm. I looked at him with my eyes reading 'Introduce me,'
"Oh! This is Stephan Jones. He goes to school with Chase, Nate and I,"
"And you are?" He asks flirtatiously as he winks at me.
I cleared my throat once more and got ahold of my bodily functions. "I'm Ashlynn, nice to meet you," I flashed my best smile and stuck out my right hand to shake.
It felt weird to introduce myself as Ashlynn. I did it to everyone I met in Primary school, but all the guys resented me because I sounded too girly. So in junior high, I started being called Ash, to be approved of. And I was actually more accepted with the guys than I was with girls. Girls are way too much drama.
I only have, no: had, one friend that was a girl. I trusted her with my life, but now I don't even trust her with anything.
Out of the corner of my vision, I saw Nate and Jer glance at each other with confused expressions. I'll explain later, I mouthed.
"Nice to meet you, can I call you Lynn?" I have never been called that, that's weird.
My brain took over, flashed a smile and replied "Sure,"
"Well see you around guys," He did this weird, three-way handshake with Nathan and Jeremy. "Pleasure to meet you, Lynn, see you around," He winked at me before turning on his heel and leaving.
When out of ear range of Stephan, Jer asked "What the hell was that? Ashlynn?"
"Lynn. Really?" Nate sounded unamused.
"What was that all about?"
"Why did you lie?"
The accusations went on for a minute and a half and then I growled "Stop,"
"Then explain then, now," Jeremy crossed his arms and leaned his weight on one foot. His girly posture almost made me laugh. Almost.
"You want to know?" I spat. "Fine. I'll start at the beginning then," I continued through clenched teeth.
"I was made fun of by every boy in my primary school. They thought I was too girly, and laughed in my face whenever I tried to befriend them or do anything with them, like sports. Then I got tired of it. In junior high, I called myself Ash. And only then did they start accepting me. From then on, I didn't have any friends that were girls. Except for one. Her name was Rita," I spat her name. A foul aftertaste appeared on my tongue, as if her name were bile.
"She and I were best friends since 7th grade. I knew everything about her, and vise versa. She knew who my crush was," I saw the guys squirm awkwardly. I have never talked about boys or crushes or love to them. "It was my neighbor. I had a crush on him since the 4th grade. Then, this past year, she decided that she would do me what she liked to call a favor. She walked from my doorstep to his, and she was invited inside. I had no idea her intentions, I thought she was going to find out if he had feelings for me.
"His bedroom window was across from mine. My neighbor weirdly took her into his room and they were just talking and everything seemed to be going to plan, and then the next thing I know, I'm in tears. Because she literally threw herself at him. They started passionately kissing and then they started to undress. I caught her eye when she walked over to draw the blinds, and her fave was full of satisfaction. That was when my life began falling apart. I lost all of my friends, my dad remarried this bitch with money, and she manipulated him to send me away for the summer so that could have 'alone time'." I paused. I waited for their reaction. They said nothing.
"Aren't you happy?" I asked, my voice shaky and tears dotting my cheeks that I didn't even realize were there. "I told you. Are you happy now? Hm?"
And without another word. I sprinted away from the beach.
I didn't go back to the cabin, no, they would find me there.
I found myself heading towards the east end of camp, towards the cabin arrest cabins. Towards Chase.
