chapter eighteen

You lay asleep on Peter's shoulder on the school bus. When he jolts up, waking you from your nap, you know something is wrong. Like, spidey-sense wrong.
"What is is?" You murmur to Peter.  As you look in the direction his eyes are pointed, the large, circle spaceship hovering over the city answers your question. Peter taps Ned in front of him.
"I need you to cause a distraction." Ned sees the spaceship and begins to freak out.
"We're all gonna die!" This causes everyone to run to the back of the bus where they can see the ship. Peter immediately grabs his web shooter from his backpack and opens a window. You jump on his back before he jumps out the window, as Tony has not designed a flying suit for you. Once his mask has fully covered his face, Peter grabs his backpack and swings away, making you slightly nauseated.

"Would you mind not doing so many flips when I'm on your back? Some of us aren't quite used to flying yet," You request after you and Peter have changed into your suits.
"Sorry." Peter's mask is on, but you can hear a smirk through his voice.
The commotion in the city is getting worse. It looks as if two aliens, one huge and spiky and the other skinny and creepy, have come out of the spaceship. The big one is in the park with Iron Man and Bruce Banner. He's about to crush Tony when Peter jumps in the middle, holding the aliens's fist up. You go to Bruce Banner who is laying in a fallen tree looking very distressed.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Who are you?" He staggers back to his feet.
"I'm (y/n). You're Bruce Banner, right? I'm a huge fan."
"Of the way I get angry and turn green?" He looks tired and confused.
"No, your work in the field of gamma rays is amazing!"
"Oh...thanks."

As Banner gives you an explanation of the current situation, an unconscious man flies by. "Kid, that's the wizard. Get on it," Tony tells Peter.
"On it." In seconds, Peter is out of sight. Moments later, he and the wizard are being beamed up into the spaceship. It's fine. He can take care of himself, you remind yourself as your mind is flooded with worried thoughts. The wizard's friend sends the large alien through a portal and closes it, leaving his hand at your feet. Banner kicks it away, and Tony flies up to the spaceship.
"They're gonna be okay, right?" You ask Banner, hoping for a positive answer. Instead, he turns to you with a frightening, hopeless look.

The higher the spaceship rises, the more nauseas you feel. When Tony has reached the ship, you realize you'd been holding your breath. After taking a few deep breaths to calm yourself, you call Peter. Pulling out your iPhone, call him on speed dial. When you hear Peter's voice, everything in you relaxes a bit. Your heart seems to slowly go back to the normal sound.
"(Y/N), I'm sorry. I can't come back. I need to stay and help Mr. Stark," He rambles on, thinking you are about to freak out.
"Peter. I know; I trust you. Just, be careful, okay?"
"Of course. I have to go." The signal becomes static, but, as it does, you hear broken pieces of "I love you."

When you begin to say it back to him, the signal goes out. You stare at the sky as the spaceship shrinks to nothing. Peter's gone. You try to keep your end of the deal and not worry, but it seems Peter has broken his already. You can't help the frantic thoughts that flood your mind. Pushing them aside, you follow Bruce back to the Avengers compound.
